The Nene Valley railway has earned itself an enviable, reputation when it comes to galas. They seem to attract top visiting locomotives, largely due to their easy connection to the mainline at Fletton Junction. They also operate and intensive timetable with the enthusiasts flocking in. This time I did not buy a ticket and travel as I was only there for a couple of hours.

D1501, 12.50 Peterborough NV-Wansford (1M48), Ailsworth TL109979
In its authentic British Railways green livery D1501 looks right hauling a set of blood and custard Mk. 1 stock. It is seen hauling the 12.50 Peterborough Nene Valley to Wansford service that appears to be well patronised by enthusiasts! The train is seen approaching Wansford passing the fixed distant and outer home signal near the end of Ailsworth Lane. As 47402 the locomotive was extensively damaged in a head-on collision with a DMU at Leeds on 06.09.77 that, unfortunately, killed both drivers.

73001, 13.12. Yarwell Junction-Peterborough NV (1E50), Ailsworth TL109979
Built in 1962 at Eastleigh Works as E6001 this electro-diesel (ED) worked throughout its life on the Southern Region eventually withdrawn in May 2000. As the pioneer member of the class it was preserved and now does the rounds of the galas looking superb in its BR blue livery. Hauling a very non-authentic rake of continental stock it approaches Ailsworth crossing working the 13.12 Yarwell Junction to Peterborough Nene Valley.

60074, 13.30 Peterborough NV-Wansford (2M49), Ailsworth TL109979
One of the mainline registered visiting locomotives to this diesel gala was 60074 'Teenage Spirit' carrying the distinctive colours of the Teenage Cancer Trust. The locomotive was specially painted and named to commemorate DB's association with the excellent charity that works to support young people who have cancer. The train is seen on the approach to Wansford leading the 13.30 Peterborough to Wansford train.

37324 (37099), 13.52 Yarwell Junction-Peterborough NV (2E51), Ailsworth TL109979
An identity crisis? The 13.52 Yarwell to Peterborough Nene Valley service creates quite an exhaust show as it accelerates away from Wansford towards Ailsworth Lane crossing. As 37324 'Clydebridge' operated on the Scottish Region from 1986 after being numbered 37099 from the introduction of TOPS. In preservation, it still wears the hallmarks of being a Scottish Region locomotive with its mini headlight and snowploughs. However, its flanks are not adorned with the trademark Scottie dogs that seems to be an unusual ommition?

56312, 14.32 Yarwell Junction-Peterborough NV (1E52), Ferry Meadows TL153970
Devon and Cornwall Railway's 56312 'Jeremiah Dixon' hauls the 14.32 Yarwell Junction to Peterborough NV away from Ferry Meadows station. DCR is a subsidiary of British American Railway Services that itself is owned by Iowa Pacific Holdings. They have made some forays into the conveyance of freight and have attempted to operate passenger trains between Okehampton and Exeter St. David's from May 2010 but this never came to fruition.

37324, 14.50 Peterborough NV-Wansford (1M51), Ferry Meadows TL153970
In my previous ramblings, two photographs ago, I stated that the restoration of 37324 'Clydebridge' did not include the well recognised Scottish Region dog adorning the side. However, not clear in that photograph was that the Motherwell Depot leaping salmon motif had been applied instead with it being clear to see in this view. The locomotive approaches Ferry Meadows station leading the Nene Valley Railway's diesel gala 14.50 Peterborough to Wansford service.

66748, 15.12 Yarwell Junction-Peterborough NV (2E53), Ferry Meadows TL153970
66748 leaves Ferry Meadows station working the 15.12 Yarwell Junction to Peterborough Nene Valley. This visiting Class 66 has been in the country for just seventeen months having been delivered new to Dutch railways some years earlier. It still wears its European all-over plain grey paintwork but with orange GBRf branding and large numbers applied to the bodysides.

56312, 15.30 Peterborough NV-Wansford (1M52), Ferry Meadows TL153970
As one of the very earliest Class 56s 56003 arrived in the UK in February 1977 and as a portent of things to come it was constructed away from our shores by Electroputere in the Romanian city of Craiova. In September 2008 it was renumbered 56312 and has since been named 'Jeremiah Dixon Son of County Durham Surveyor of the Mason-Dixon Line USA' (to give it its full name!). Now wearing its rather drab DCR colour scheme it approaches Ferry Meadows leading the 15.30 Peterborough Nene Valley to Wansford service.
