A trip to the Nene Valley Railway's diesel gala and then the short distance to the ECML to see the final and return leg of The Highlands and Islands Explorer charter being hauled by 60009 'Union of South Africa'. As it was such a smashing late spring day I borrowed my wife's Audi A3 convertible to enjoy some roof-down motoring!

The Nene Valley railway has earned itself an enviable, reputation when it comes to galas. They seem to attract top visiting locomotives, largely due to their easy connection to the mainline at Fletton Junction. They also operate and intensive timetable with the enthusiasts flocking in. This time I did not buy a ticket and travel as I was only there for a couple of hours. |

After spending some time at the Nene Valley Railway's diesel gala I took a short drive to the ECML just south of Peterborough to record the passage of the returning Highlands & Islands Explorer railtour being hauled by 60009 'Union of South Africa'. Due to it having a scheduled layover in the Connington Loops I could see it again a little further south. |
