An Easter family outing to our local preserved line, the Northampton and Lamport Railway. We took our bikes and had a ride along the Brampton Way that follows the route of the line for a short distance on the former Northampton to Market Harborough line closed by BR in 1981.

2. No.53 & 2104, stabled, Pitsford yard
Two of the Northampton and Lamport Railways assets sit idle in the yard just adjacent to the station undergoing attention. Firstly is №53 'Sir Alfred Wood', an 0-6-0 Ruston 165DS class diesel locomotive built in 1953. It initially saw work at various industrial location including for the British Sugar Corporation. It was sold into preservation in 1991 going to the Nene Valley Railway before then moving to the Northampton Ironstone Railway. Finally, it moved to the NLR where it has been undergoing a protracted restoration even since! In front of the shunter is the steam mainstay of the NLR in the form of Peckett R4 Class 0-4-0ST № 2104. This locomotive has been on the railway from the very beginnings before it even began running trains back in 1996!

47395, 12.30 Pitsford return & 31289, Pitsford & Brampton station
47395 leaves Pitsford and Brampton station with the 12.30 return service. To the left, in an unusual version of BR blue, is 31289 undergoing a light restoration.

31289, undergoing restoration, Pitsford yard
31289 undergoes some much-needed cosmetic restoration in Pitsforrd yard to the northern end of the Northampton and Lamport Railway. The former British Railways Type 3 has been operating in a very dilapidated state for a number of years being named, slightly tongue in cheek I suspect, 'Pheonix'! I am not sure what the paint is that is being used but I hope that it is only an undercoat!

Milepost (7 miles for Northampton), SP734699
Riding or walking along the Brampton Way between Northampton and Market Harborough, following the route of the former line that was closed by BR in 1981, reveals quite a lot of former railway assets. With the railway fencing in the background is a milepost emerging from the undergrowth. Counting back reveals that the seven miles are from Northampton but not the station. Seven miles from this post is the location of the former steam shed (4B, closed 25.05.65) in the town's Far Cotton.
