A work trip from Wellingborough to Wakefield in order to collect a car for a customer. A bit of a jolly really for the boss and I having a very wet drive back down the M1 in a very ordinary Peugeot 308. However, the main significance was that it marked my first trip on a train since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic with my last journey being way back on 22.02.20!

43073, EM 06.34 Leeds-London St. Pancras (1B23, RT), Wellingborough station
43073 leads the 06.34 Leeds to St. Pancras East Midlands Railway HST service through Wellingborough station. Work continues to finish the virtual complete re-build of the station, bar the actual buildings themselves, with the new requisite barriers being installed at the top of the platform ramps.

66103, 08.58 Elstow Redland-Mountsorrel (4D32, 13E), Wellingborough station
The changing face of Wellingborough station and continuing work makes the taking of photographs tricky where once they were easy! This was a relatively straightforward photograph from platform one of a northbound freight passing through platform three. However, now, 66103 is obscured by plastic barriers and with new CCTV towers and electrification masts dissecting the loco and growing from its roof! This photograph shows the DB Class 66103 leading the 4D32 08.58 Elstow to Mountsorrel empty stone train.

222023, EM 08.26 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C25, 1E), Wellingborough station
222023 comes to a halt at Wellingborough station working the 08.26 Sheffield to St. Pancras East Midlands Railway service. Since my last visit to the station at the beginning of February the station canopies, that were undergoing work then, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/28700323804/platform-1-wellingborough-station, have been completely removed. I hope that somebody is watching this work to ensure that they are returned and reinstalled appropriately when the electrification works are completed.

4. Yours truly, Wellingborough station
Yours truly sitting on Wellingborough station working out how to partake in my coffee whilst wearing my requisite face-covering! On our journey to Wakefield, we observed almost complete compliance with the compulsory face mask policy whilst using public transport.

222009, 09.05 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1D16, 4L), Loughborough station
As part of the split ticketing that I used to plan the journey from Wellingborough to Wakefield, we had to make a change at Loughborough. Having just alighted from 222009 it is seen leaving Loughborough station forming the 09.05 St. Pancras to Sheffield.

222012, EM 09.31 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F17, 2E), Loughborough station
I am not absolutely convinced by EMR's new purple livery that is certainly a little different and reminiscent of Porterbrook's mid-noughties paint scheme. After initially only painting one of their Meridians, EMR are now moving through the class with more losing their East Midlands Trains' paint scheme. 222012 arrives at Loughborough station working the 09.31 St. Pancras to Sheffield service that we took to its destination. It's interesting to note that there is already evidence of the previous operator's colours on the fibreglass chin below the coupling gear on this recently repainted set!

170458, NT 11.57 Sheffield-Hull (1W44, 1E), Sheffield station
The cascading of stock from operator to operator seems to be a constant process at the moment with the continual introduction of new trains releasing older stock enabling it to go elsewhere. The last time I saw 170458 it was standing on Edinburgh Waverley back in 2016, see...... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/25778314204/x334020-10-37-edinburgh-waverley Now, wearing Northern's new livery, it is seen leaving Sheffield working the 11.57 to Hull.

195008, NT 10.38 Lincoln Central-Sheffield (2P70, RT), Sheffield station
This is my first photograph of a Class 195 Civity unit. 195008 is one of twenty-five units in this subclass that are formed by two coaches and operate throughout the Northern network. It is seen arriving at Sheffield station with the 2P70 10.38 from Lincoln. These CAF built units look very smart and are a direct replacement for the much-maligned and life expired Pacers that Northern, at the time of writing, is still operating.

150206, NT 12.02 Sheffield-Leeds (2L14, 4E), Sheffield station
150206 is about to get underway from Sheffield with the 12.02 to Leeds. Surprisingly, this unit is a photographic cop as it was a West Country unit operated by FGW. I managed a lot of photographs of these units in various locations but not this one!

220029, XC 07.27 Plymouth-Newcastle (1S41, RT) & 222006, EM 12.29 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C45, RT), Sheffield station
Two units that are virtually identical in their construction but operating under different names, different classes and for different operators stand at Sheffield station. To the left at platform one is one of CrossCountry's Voyagers 220029 working the 07.27 Plymouth to Newcastle whilst EMR's Meridian 222029 waits to work the 12.29 to London St. Pancras. In theory, these two variants of the Bombardier built units ought to be able to operate together but they have incompatible electrical connections witnessed by the large jumper cable connector on the front of the 220 and its absence from the 222 being replaced by a chin cross piece. We took the CrossCountry service the relatively short distance to Wakefield in order to complete our journey.

Tickets, Wellingborough-Wakefield
Our electronic tickets for the journey from Wellingborough to Wakefield. Even with our Two Together discount loaded, the best that I could manage using split ticketing was £56.60 for the pair of us. I thought that this was a little pricey but it was still a fair bit cheaper than making the journey from Northampton that would have been a far more convenient start point.
