After a morning on the King's Road with my wife who, amazingly, managed to limit her spending to some perfume, we headed home from Euston to Northampton.

As it was to transpire, this was to be my (our) last trip on a train for an absolute age due to the COVID-19 pandemic with me finally travelling to Wakefield at the end of August!

350104, LN 13.15 London Euston-Rugeley Trent Valley & Crewe (Cancelled from Northampton) (1Y17 & 2H68, 2L), London Euston station
With its recently applied paint shining well, London Northwestern's 350104 waits at Euston to leave with the 13.15 to Rugeley Trent Valley and Crewe with the train splitting on arrival at Birmingham New Street. My wife and I took this service back home to Northampton where, unfortunately, it was cancelled. The guard announced that the cause of this cancellation was due to a broken down train between Northampton and Rugby meaning that the train crew were unable to take the train on. Whilst in BR days trains broke down all too frequently, the knock-on results of a failure were far less due to them having far greater levels of flexibility over things such as 'train crews being in the wrong place'.

66167, stabled after working 18.15 ThO Bow-Wembley yard (6M05), Wembley yard
66167 stands in Wembley Yard at the head of some ballast wagons. Mike, who has access to TOPS, tells me that this Class 66 arrived leading the 18.15 Bow to Wembley Yard on Thursday. It then sat in the yard until Tuesday (over two days after this picture was taken) leaving as 6C91 to Tilbury.

According to TOPS, it would then work forward on the 6C91 Freighliner to Tilbury on Tuesday morning. Thanks to Mike for the information on this as he has access to TOPS and can identify movements such as this.
66142, 01.28 London Gateway-Wembley Yard-Trafford Park (4M83 & 84), Wembley yard
One of Maritime's Class 66s stands in Wembley Yard looking smart in the operator's blue livery. 66142 'Maritime Intermodal Three' is being held over at the front of the 4M83 01.28 London Gateway to Trafford Park. It arrived earlier in the morning and did not work forward until Monday morning as 4M84. Thanks again to Mike for the information from TOPS identifying what this working was.

Tickets, London Euston-Northampton
Our return tickets from Euston to Northampton were excellent value at £6.25 each. At the risk of repeating myself, the crazy ticketing structure that we have on our railways really does need dealing with to avoid anomalies such as this.
