Our traditional bike ride to Holt from our accommodation at Kelling Heath found us calling at the NNR terminus station to rest our legs. Whilst my wife and son were preparing themselves for the onslaught I rode out to capture the first few NNR workings of the day.

564, 10.30 Sheringham-Holt, Kelling Bank
Former GER Y14 564 storms up Kelling bank with the first steam working of the day, the 10.30 Sheringham to Holt. It made a purposeful departure from Weybourne station some mile from where this picture was taken to then ease back as it approached and slow to a little more than walking place suggesting that it may be in some sort of trouble. I love the lighting in this autumnal image with the moring sun picking out some delicious colouring in the decaying leaves prior to their imminent dropping.

564, 11.25 Holt-Sheringham, Kelling Heath
Having worked to Holt leading the first steam-hauled service of the day, Y14 number 564 now leads tender first with the return 11.25 to Sheringham over Kelling Heath. In the intervening thirty minutes since the train last passed me the cloud has rolled in and the sun has gone making the scene look rather dull only brightened up by the decaying bracken (Pteridium) proliferating on the embankment in the foreground.

564, running round, Holt station
At the present time, this is far south as the North Norfolk Railway goes; the headshunt at Holt station. They have ambitious and long-held plans to extend the line over the road just behind me and then parallel to the A148 Holt bypass to a new terminus station closer to the village centre. Y14 564 runs round on the headshunt in order to work the 12.45 to Sheringham.

On a relatively warm autumn day such as this, the open cab of the former Great Eastern Railay Y14 564 is pleasant place to work. However, in foul weather, the exposed working environment would not be quite so nice! 564 gets the right away from the guard at Holt station to work the 12.45 to Sheringham.

M51192 & M56352, 15.45 Sheringham-Holt, Kelling Heath Halt station
In superb late afternoon lighting one of the NNR's resident class 101 DMUs composed of M51192 and M56352 climb Kelling bank with the 15.45 Sheringham to Holt. I must admit to a little Photoshop work to get this image presentable as the camera had exposed properly for the background and sky leaving the foreground chronically underexposed and dark. However, with a little patience, I am pleased with the result that presents a very seasonal and quite atmospheric photograph.

Home signal, Weybourne
Weybourne's home signal is nicely silhouetted against the last of the afternoon sunshine as the sun sets. The lenses of the Great Eastern origin signal, complete with slotted post add a dash of colour to the photograph. I toyed with the idea of desaturating the image just leaving the green and red of the lenses but it it looked a little passé preferring the natural look.

564, going on shed, Weybourne station
Having done its work for the day, former Great Eastern J14 number 564 has just run back from Sheringham light engine and is seen at Weybourne about to take the shed road. Once in the yard, the fire will be dropped and it will be serviced as appropriate. The J14 is quite at home on lines such as this where they saw regular service throughout this part of the country being numerous (two hundred and eight nine were built) and extremely competent mixed traffic locomotive.

With the cocks open to lower boiler pressure in preparation for the J14 564 to be disposed of by the fireman in Weybourne yard. It will run tender first the short distance into the yard where it will join the other locomotives and it will be effectively shut down including dropping the filre and undertaking any daily maimtance tasks as required.

M56352 & M51192, 16.20 Holt-Sheringham, Weybourne station
With the cabin lights inside the Class 101 DMU, composed of M56352 and M51192, glowing warmly, the 16.20 Holt to Sheringham pauses at Weybourne station. It will soon make its way to its destination where it will be switched off for the night, cleaned and prepared for the next day's operations.

M56352 & M51192, 16.20 Holt-Sheringham, Weybourne station
M56352 and M51192 gets underway away from Weybourne station with the last service train of the day, the 16.20 Holt to Sheringham. The scene at the superbly restored Weybourne station is dominated by the latticed iron footbridge, typical of many East Anglian stations. This particular example was rescued from Stowmarket station when it had to be removed with the arrival of electrification in 1982. It was dismantled and brought to Weybourne to be rebuilt, minus its rudimentary roof, in 1990. However, Weybourne station never had a footbridge during its earlier operational life with passengers using a foot crossing. Ironically, Sheringham station did have a bridge but now does not; something that I am sure will be rectified soon.
