During a long run of dismal and wet weather characterised by a procession of low-pressure systems passing over the country, I have not been getting out as much as in recent months. However, the passing of another heavily delayed delivery working of a pair of new Merseyrail Stadler units persuaded me to venture out with a camera in one hand and an umbrella in the other!

66415, 03.39 Garston-London Gateway (4L32, 9E), site of Roade station
With its Freightliner Genesee and Wyoming livery brightening up the dull morning, 66415 'You Are Never Alone' leads the 4L32 03.39 Garston to London Gateway Freightliner past Roade. The Class 66 was named during the autumn of last year (2019) in association with the Samaritans in a short ceremony at Ipswich station, see.... https://www.railadvent.co.uk/2019/11/freightliner-names-locomotive-you-are-never-alone.html

66730, 777005 & 777009, 02.44 Dollands Moor-Kirkdale (6X29, 5L), site of Roade station
In the utter gloom of a foul July morning, 66730 'Whitemoor' leads the 02.44 Dollands Moor to Kirkdale new stock movement through Roade. The GBRf locomotive is towing a pair of brand new Merseyrail units to their new home having arrived from the continent through the tunnel the previous day. 777005 and 777009 are the units being conveyed and now several months late with the first ones due in service by now. Notice that the units are articulated following in the best traditions of innovative design such as was applied to the APT-P, the LNER Silver Jubilee train and Eurostars to name just three. There was a very interesting article in Traction issue 257 on the subject of railway articulation written by Colin Boocock.

777005 & 777009, 02.44 Dollands Moor-Kirkdale (6X29, 5L), site of Roade station
A close up of new Merseyrail unit 777009 (with 777005 just going out of shot) passing Roade being dragged to its new home running as the 6X29 02.44 Dollands Moor to Kirkdale. The delivery of these Stadler built units is now chronically late in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic but, more importantly, because of software issues with the units on testing. Is it me or does this issue afflict all new trains these days? Notice that the driver's door of 777005 is partially open. Given the heavy and persistent rain experienced I hope that the dampness has not got into the cab and interfered with the very sensitive electrics and software creating further problems!
