My Saturday afternoon walk coincided with four interesting workings within fifteen minutes of each other!

66053, 14.41 DIRFT-Dollands Moor (6O67, 83E), Victoria bridge
Despite its rather faded EWS paintwork, I am pleased to have a photograph of 66053 working the 6O67 Daventry to Dollands Moor empty vans. This is because this particular 1999 example is a photographic cop. The train is seen passing Victoria bridge between Northampton and Milton Keynes on a warm and humid summer's afternoon that would soon descend into a very stormy early evening with some dramatic thunderstorms.

172332, 13.16 Ilford EMUD-Tyseley LMD (5Q66, 80E), Victoria bridge
It's come to a poor situation that a unit has to travel from its base in the West Midlands to have its wheels turned on a lathe in Essex! This is exactly what West Midlands Trains' 172332 has just had done returning as the 5Q66 13.16 Ilford to Tyseley. It is seen on the down fast line just south of Roade in Northamptonshire. I stand to be corrected but I believe that Ilford depot has one of the only suitable wheel lathes in the country meaning that it has a steady flow of work involving a lot of comings and goings. Could you imagine that in BR days?

86628, 86639, 86614 & 86637, 12.30 Crewe Basford Hall-Wembley-Reception (4A96, 21E), Victoria bridge
This was a little unexpected! I was waiting for the 12.30 Crewe Basford Hall to Wembley 4A96 Freightliner half expecting it to be Class 86 hauled as is often the case but when this came into view I was delighted! I am not sure if two of the four locomotives made up of 86628, 86639, 86614 and 86637 had failed or if this was some sort of positioning move - advice anybody? Only the first two were taking power and it was running early after leaving Basford Hall on time. On a hot and humid afternoon, the impressive train is seen heading south with the village of Roade in the background including my house!

68013 & 68008, 09.35 Wembley LMD-Crewe Gresty Bridge (0K99, 53L), Victoria bridge
Passing through the Northamptonshire countryside on a hot summer's day 68013 and 68008 'Avenger' are seen about to go under Victoria bridge near Roade as the 0K99 09.35 Wembley to Crewe Gresty Bridge. The first of the two locomotives is in its Chiltern livery being operated by them but owned and maintained by DRS hence its move from North London to Crewe for an examination or maintenance of some kind. As the trailing Class 68 is one of two DRS liveried locos fitted with American Railroads (AAR) push-pull equipment allowing them to operate Mk.IIIs I suspect that this was heading north for the same reason as 68013.
