On a wet Sunday, I ventured out on Bertie the Brompton to capture three interesting trains all within an hour of each other. Firstly, a top and tailed long engineering working, secondly, a top and tailed Class 360 move and, thirdly, the final Mossend diversion.

66434, 13.09 DIRFT-Ripple Lane (4L48, RT), Gordon`s Lodge
66434 works its way along the up slow line leading the 4L48 13.09 Daventry to Ripple Lane past Gordon's Lodge a short distance north of Hanslope Junction. Note the particularly dark and menacing cloud approaching from the north that did what you would expect it to do in the next ten minutes; good job I was wearing my GORE-TEX jacket!

66708, 10.00 Willesden West London Junction-Bescot up engineers (7G52, 2L), Gordon`s Lodge
In the pouring rain of a June afternoon, 66708 'Jayne' plods its way past Gordon's Lodge between Wolverton and Northampton leading the 10.00 Willesden to Bescot engineering train. Behind the two mini cranes is a long rake of JNA wagons. The last time that I saw 66708 it was just as dull as it is on this day but at least it was not raining, see...... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/27343880004/x66708-15-28-scunthorpe-roxby-gullet

66732, 10.00 Willesden West London Junction-Bescot up engineers (7G52, 2L), Gordon`s Lodge
In the pouring rain and terrible lighting 66732 'GBRf The First Decade 1999-2009 John Smith MD' trails along at the rear of the 7G52 10.00 Willesden to Bescot engineering train. This is my first photograph of this particular Class 66 on the mainline with my only other images being when it operated on the Nene Valley Railway in 2009 being less than a year old.

Fox, Gordon`s Lodge
I observed this fox (Vulpes vulpes) for some minutes across the tracks from where I was standing in the rain at Gordon's Lodge near Hanslope Junction. Despite being downwind he was totally oblivious to me standing on the bank - so much for foxes' legendary sense of smell!
47749 & 360105, 11.10 Ilford EMUD-Northampton EMD (7Q60, 2L), Gordon`s Lodge
As I was watching this train approach and pass under the bridge at Gordon's Lodge through the viewfinder it was moving very slowly and looked just like so many trains that I had photographed back in the 1970s and 1980s! Indeed, as a West Country lad, I will have seen this particular locomotive so many times in an earlier guise as 47076 being one of the fifteen named Western Region members of the class. Now as 47749 'City of Truro' it is seen leading the 7Q60 that is hauling a former Greater Anglia Desiro 360105 from its former base at Ilford to Northampton. I am unsure as to why exactly this move was taking place but it is to do with its future use on the MML between Corby and London St. Pancras.

47727, 360105 & 47749, 11.10 Ilford EMUD-Northampton EMD (7Q60, 2L), Gordon`s Lodge
In its Caledonian Sleeper livery 47727 'Edinburgh Castle/Caisteal Dhún Éideann' brings up the rear of the 11.10 Ilford to Northampton depots move taking 360105 to the Siemens depot at Kingsheath with 47749 'City of Truro' at the front. Notice the member of staff in the rear cab of the Class 47 relaxing in the second man's seat with his feet resting on the control desk! Also, notice the Pendolino heading north on the down fast. This very nearly bowled me completely blocking out the subject as it passed me. Luckily it was travelling extremely slowly allowing me to take an approaching and this going away photographs.

88002, 13.50 DIRFT-Mossend (4L45, 5E), Gordon`s Lodge
For the final week (of four) the 4L45 Daventry to Mossend Tesco Express is seen heading south on the WCML - the first part of its convoluted journey to Scotland. As per last week, it is being led by 88002 'Prometheus' this time past Gordon's Lodge a short distance north of Hanslope Junction. Unfortunately, the train is fairly lightly loaded with all the wagons towards the rear that does nothing for the composition of the photograph! The foreground is dominated by a forest of cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) that seems to have enjoyed a very strong season this year. After negotiating the plant and waist-high nettles I was able to get back to my bike and endure a wet ride home bumping into Richard Denny at Victoria bridge.
