60. Scottish diversions again for the final time?-31.05.20

The third Sunday of Scottish diversions got me out again to capture these unusually routed Freightliner workings. Allegedly there is one more week remaining whilst improvements take place in the Borders with the closure of the WCML in the vicinity. On this particular day, I was joined at Victoria bridge by Richard Deny.

88002, 13.50 DIRFT-Mossend (4L45, 6E), Victoria bridge
For the third week on the trot, the 13.50 Daventry to Mossend service has initially travelled south to then head north along the ECML to Scotland due to engineering works in the Borders. This brings the rather rare sight of a Class 88 working a train on the southern WCML. Having left Daventry some thirty minutes previously, 88002, 'Prometheus' leads the relatively short train just south of Roade at Victoria bridge with no Class 68 tucked in behind as was the case last week, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/29049624004/x88005-68015-14-20-dirft-mossend As you can see from the photograph, an errant cloud has just spoilt the light on the front of the locomotive taking the edge off the lighting.

350254, 350246 & 350235, LN 17.02 Northampton-London Euston (2N46, 7L), Ashton Road bridge
A trio of London Northwestern Desiros pass Roade, seen in the background, and are about to pass under Ashton Road bridge with the Sunday afternoon 17.02 Northampton to Euston 2N46 service. Don't turn up at this location to take photographs of either north or southbound trains unless in possession of a ladder as without one it is all but impossible due to very high parapets - that is unless your camera has a flip-out screen and you have long arms!

390148 'Flying Scouseman' is about to whip underneath Ashton Road bridge just south of Roade. It is working the 1B53 16.30 Birmingham New Street to Euston service.

66176, 16.50 DIRFT-Grangemouth (4M49, 30E), Ashton Road bridge
66176 is a member of the class that has eluded me. I have only one other photograph of it and that was a poor one with it being the second locomotive double-heading a freight at Marholm way back in 2010. It is seen here passing Roade leading an unusual working that looks for all intents and purposes like a perfectly normal up Freightliner. However, this is the 4M49 16.50 Daventry to Grangemouth that is taking a circuitous route to reach Scotland via London and the ECML. With no air conditioning in the cabs and continued complaints from drivers about unpleasant conditions, as is usual on hot days, they will drive with the cab doors open to aid ventilation. I am not sure if this is allowed according to the rule book!
