A trip to Knaresborough to collect a car for a customer at work. My boss and I had a lovely drive back from Yorkshire in a very average Ford Focus!

350107, LM 07.54 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (2Y17), Northampton station
Our train first train of the day from Northampton to Rugby stands at Northampton station. 350107 is working the 07.54 Euston to Birmingham London Midland service. Notice the boarding to the far right of the image marking the location of the old footbridge that has recently been removed following its repacement as part of the rebuilding of the station.

57307, stabled thunderbird, Rugby station
Stabled Thunderbird 57307 'Lady Penelope' stands in one of Rugby's remaining south-facing bay platforms. As well as still having it's nameplates from its Virgin days, the 57 has also had a clear message to cable thieves stuck to each side. Whilst the vinyls give a clear message, I am not so sure that the people responsible will be at all bothered by it?

Nameplate, 57307, Rugby station
I thought that the nameplate attached to the side of 57307 'Lay Penelope' had faded from red during Virgin days to this rather natty pink. However, I have just found an image on the internet of this Thunderbird locomotive straight after its conversion in 2002 and yes, it had a pink nameplate then. 350121, 08.46 London Euston-Crewe (1U27), Rugby station
Our second train of the journey from Northampton to Knaresborough arrives at Rugby. We caught 350121 working the 08.46 Euston to Crewe for the relatively short trip to Tamworth.

66014, 05.36 Southampton eastern docks-Halewood car empties, Tamworth station
A bit of grab shot taken from the steps leading up to Tamworth's high-level platform. Looking down to the low-level platforms, 66014 leads the 05.36 Southampton eastern docks to Halewood empty cartics. The train has travelled from Southampton up to Winchester, Basingstoke, Reading, Didcot, Banbury, Coventry, Nuneaton and thence up the Trent Valley route. Yesterday it travelled the opposite direction full of Jaguar and Land Rover products all going for export.

350120, LM 09.02 Crewe-London Euston (1U24), Tamworth station
Passengers have just alighted from the 09.02 Crewe to London Euston London Midland service at Tamworth low-level station. 350120 is about to depart continuing its journey south and will run 'fast' from Rugby to London. I am standing on the steps that lead up to Tamworth's high-level platforms.

220008, XC 06.25 Plymouth-Glasgow Central (1S39) Tamworth station
It's now 10.25 in the morning and we have been travelling for an hour and a half and have only got as far as Tamworth from Northampton having been on two trains with the third arriving at the high-level platform three. Unfortunately, there are plenty of passengers waiting to join this already crowded four-car unit that simply does not provide enough capacity on such a principle route. Fortunately, we had seat reservations for our journey to Wakefield Westgate but plenty of travellers did not and had to stand.

Trevor & 322484, NT 11.26 Doncaster-Leeds (2B14), Wakefield Westgate station
My boss gazes at me not quite able to understand my interest in railways and my obsession to take pictures, despite me trying to explain it to him several times! He stands on Wakefield Westgate station as our next train for our Northampton to Knaresborough journey arrives. Northern Rail's 322484, working the 11.26 Doncaster to Leeds that we took to the end of its journey.

150140, NT 12.26 Leeds-Manchester Victoria (2U30), Leeds station
Northern Rail's 150140 and another unidentified unit will soon wor the 12.26 to manchester Victoria. It stands inside Leeds station that, despite being completely rebuilt relatively recently will win nothing in the design stakes. It is to undergo a further refurbishment and expansion in the coming few years and then there is HS3 off course!

144022, NT 12.29 Leeds-York (2C30) & 158755, NT 12.18 Leeds-Manchester Victoria (2M10), Leeds station
Our fifth and final train of the day is Pacer 144022 that will take us from here at Leeds to Knaresborough anticlockwise via Harrogate. Next to the 12.29 Leeds to York is the 12.18 to manchester Victoria made up of 158755. According to the time code on the camera and the guard's position at the rear cab of the unit I believe that the doors were being closed as it readied for its departure.

185131, TP 11.53 York-Manchester Airport (1P33), Leeds station
The 11.53 York to Manchester Airport leaves Leeds station formed by 185131. TPE operate fifty-one of these high power dmus that belong to the Desiro family of trains built by Siemens. Unfortunately, this subclass of the highly successful family have been blighted by high fuel consumption despite having an eco-mode installed in 2007 that ultimately was removed due to unreliability issues associated with its software.

A semi-pan photograph of 91125 propelling the 12.15 to King's Cross Virgin East Coast service out of Leeds station. Virgin has been operating the east coast services for nearly four months now but has only made limited progress re-painting the trains with just these rather dramatic vinyl flashes applied to the sides.

Cab, 144022, NT 12.29 Leeds-York (2C30), Leeds station
The driver's desk of 144022 is seen as it the unit waits at Leeds station complete with the driver's cup of tea! It is about to work the 2C30 12.29 to York that will travel the clockwise route via Harrogate. We travelled on this unit bouncing all the way to Knaresborough as the final part of our journey from Northampton.

Class 14X, NT 13.11 York-Leeds (2C33), Knaresborough viaduct
The town of Knaresborough is situated just east of Harrogate and is a charming town that is popular with tourists. Looking at this view down by the River Nidd it is easy to understand why it is so popular. Indeed, on the strength of our fleeting visit to collect a car, my boss then spent a long weekend here with his wife a few weeks after this picture was taken. With the glorious viaduct in full view, a Pacer leaves the station, located out of sight to the right, with the 13.11 York to Leeds service. Notice the smashing signal box joined to the end of the terraced houses in the top right of the image, an alternative view can be seen at..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/v/photos/21936chg/28195221804/x170472-11-11-york-leeds-2c33-11l

Tickets, Northampton-Knaresborough
Using split ticketing meant that the journey from Northampton to Knaresborough was split into five separate parts. Studying the tickets reveals some interesting anomalies. For example, the Rugby to Derby leg is £14.40 whereas, the sum total of the two legs from Derby to Wakefield is just over £7! If any one of the many reviews that suggest the removal of split ticketing is ever acted upon I will miss them in terms of the interesting breakdowns that they create and the consequential mass production of paper tickets!
