Our journey back from Manchester. Possibly my last trip on a Virgin Pendolino before the new operator takes over from 8th December 2019?

142095 & 142096, stabled, Manchester Piccadilly station
A scene soon to disappear from Manchester Piccadilly, and all stations for that matter, over the coming few months. Consecutively numbered 142095 and 142096 are seen stabled at Piccailly's platform one. Despite some searching on RTT I could not identify when they worked in or when they were to work out again. Platforms one and two were synonymous with the Woodhead route being electrified using the 1500v DC overhead system. This situation continued until 1984, despite the closure of the Woodhead route in 1981, as local services to Glossop and Hadfield still used DC stock in the form of the class 507 units.

319385, NT 11.58 Crewe-Manchester Piccadilly (2H43, 4L), Manchester Piccadilly station
319385 has just arrived at Manchester Piccadilly with the 11.58 from Crewe whilst passengers on the adjacent platform four are kept waiting to board a CrossCountry Voyager. These former Thameslink class 319s must represent a significant improvement for passengers in this area with them having undergone a full overhaul. They are spacious and comfortable, far more so than the class 700 units now on the Bedford to London services!

195120, NT 12.41 Manchester Airport-Barrow-in-Furness (1C54, 1E), Manchester Piccadilly station
With the skyline of Manchester resembling Singapore or Hong Kong Manchester Piccadilly's platform fourteen is somewhat dwarfed, despite itself being in an elevated position! This is my first picture of a CAF Civity train, in this case, 195120 working the 12.41 Manchester Airport to Barrow-in-Furness. Platforms thirteen and fourteen are the only through platforms at Piccadilly. They are chronically congested and, as there is no possibility of expansion, Network Rail has a problem on its hands; quite how they will solve this is not clear. Interestingly, it is these two platforms that prevented Piccadilly from winning the Major station award at the recent National Rail Awards with local arch-rival Lime Street pipping it to the post!

390020, VT 13.15 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A33, 2L), Manchester Piccadilly station
390120 stands at Manchester Piccadilly station ready to work the 13.15 to London Euston. My wife and I took this train back home to Milton Keynes. Things did not quite to plan due to issues with the OLE north of Colwich. At Stone, we were diverted across to Norton Junction to then head south to Stafford. From there we headed south-east back to our planned route at Colwich Junction. This re-route added a few minutes to arrival time at Milton Keynes as there did appear to be plenty of recovery time within the timings. This could be my last Virgin Pendolino journey before the new operator takes over at the start of December?

185130, 10.26 Cleethorpes-Manchester Airport (1B75, RT), Manchester Piccadilly station
TransPennine Express' 185130 arrives into Manchester Piccadilly station forming the 10.26 from Cleethorpes. Its journey is not quite over yet, as it will soon reverse and complete its journey at Manchester Airport.

Tickets, Manchester Piccadilly-Milton Keynes Central
Our tickets home from Piccadilly to Milton Keynes. At just under £16 each they were considerably more than the outward tickets, see.....https://www.ontheupfast.com/v/photos/21936chg/27878207004/tickets-milton-keynes-central-manchester Both were OP advanced fares so it just goes to prove, yet again, the ridiculous pricing policies that operate on our railway and this despite so many 'reviews' that were supposed to sort out this highly unsatisfactory situation.
