Whilst my wife and son undertook some Oxford Street retail therapy, I popped to King's Cross for an hour or so.

365540, GN 12.25 King`s Cross-Peterborough (1P52), London King`s Cross station
365540 and another unit stand at King's Cross' platform seven waiting to leave with the 12.25 to Peterborough. The class 365 Networkers have done good work on the stopper services out of King's Cross on the Great Eastern routes. Originally built by BR at York (the last trains before its closure) they had bin style windows and no air conditioning. When a/c was retro. fitted they had the odd curved grill fitted at the front giving rise to their 'happy train' nickname.

Trains in transition at King's Cross. Still wearing their grey state-owned East Coast livery, that itself was based around the previously failed operator National Express' paint scheme, 91120 and 43314 wait at King's Cross. From the first day of last month, Stagecoach (90%) and Virgin (10%) have taken over the franchise in a joint venture branded as Virgin East Coast. The branding has been applied to the side of 91120 as it waits with the 12.30 to Newcastle. The HST retains its East Coast branding as the leading power car of the 12.35 to Leeds.

67016, stabled, London King`s Cross station
As the station 'Thunderbird' 67016 sits idle at London King's Cross station in front of the power signal box. The 67 is ready for action if and one of the many trains that comes in and out of King`s Cross fails and requires urgent recovery to keep the lines running.

313043, GN 11.30 Stevenage-London KIng`s Cross (2D29), London King`s Cross station
313043 still in its First Capital Connect livery arrives into King's Cross with the 11.30 from Stevenage. Notice the crudely applied Great Northern branding vinyl on the side of the lead carriage. Govia is the parent company of Great Northern who took over the franchise in September last year so it is clear that they are making slow progress re-branding their many trains.

82210, GR 10.03 York-London King`s Cross (1Y82), London King`s Cross station
Emerging from Gasworks Tunnel at the end of its journey, the 10.03 from York arrives at King's Cross with 82210 leading. The train is still branded as East Coast, the state-owned operator controlled, albeit at a very long arm's length, by the Department of Transport. This TOC ceased its operations from the first of last month (March).

82226, GR 10.15 Leeds-London King`s Cross (1A22), London King`s Cross station
82226 is about to disappear into the darkness of Gasworks Tunnel as it leaves King's Cross at the rear of the 10.15 to Leeds. With the chronic over-crowding of King's Cross, there are discussions to re-open the disused tunnel that can be seen behind the DVT. It is currently used as access and as a route for much electrical cabling. The King's Cross power signal box partially blocks the portal so that issue will need consideration before any re-opening can take place.

43319, GR 12.35 London King`s Cross-Leeds (1D14), London King`s Cross station
Hurridly applied in the last month, the Virgin vinyl flash certainly strikes pose on the side of 43319. It is seen leaving King's Cross at the rear of the 1D14 12.35 to Leeds. It looks as though I am about to get wet judging by the sky to the north of King's Cross; time to head back under the train shed!

82210, GR 13.00 London King`s Cross-Edinburgh (1S18) & 43468, GC 12.53 London King`s Cross-Sunderland (1N93), London King`s Cross station
A busy scene at King's Cross' platform ends as passengers make their way down number two to board the 13.00 to Edinburgh with DVT 82210 at the rear. Next to it, Grand Central's HST, with power car 43468 at the rear, will already be boarded as it will soon be leaving as the 12.53 to Sunderland. The passengers next to the HST will be disembarking from an up service that will have just have terminated at platform 0.

I have taken many photographs at King's Cross' platform ends over the years. My strongest and most powerful memories are from my first visits to The Cross in the late 1970s. I will always remember climbing from the depths of the old tube station straight up to the platform level, just behind where I am standing to take this picture in fact. Before emerging into the daylight, I would eagerly be listening out for the drone of a Deltic idling at the stops with a palpable sense expectation and excitement! Nothing quite so joyous today with DVT 82210 at the back of the 13.00 to Edinburgh whilst HST power car 43468 will provide the power at the rear of the 12.53 to Sunderland.

This is a photograph that I could never have planned and one that I will never be likely to replicate showing the two celebrity class 91s standing adjacent to each other at King's Cross. To the left, 91111 'For the Fallen' will work the 1S18 13.00 to Edinburgh whilst to the right, 91110 'Battle of Britain Memorial Flight' has just arrived powering at the rear of the 1E06 06.50 from Glasgow Central. Wherever these locomotives are, they arouse the interest of the public and enthusiasts alike with their dramatic artwork and graphics. To the far left, deep inside the trainshed, Grand Central's HST power car 43465 will soon leave King's Cross with the 1N93 12.53 to Sunderland.

43367, GR 08.30 Edinburgh-London King`s Cross (1E07), London King`s Cross station
Mixed information as to which TOC is running the 08.30 Edinburgh to King's Cross HST service as it arrives at its destination! Virgin branded power car 43367 'Deltic 50 1955-2005 V' is leading the train whilst the stock is still wearing its state-owned and run East Coast branding. I do wonder about the effort and cost of re-branding everything from the stationary to the locomotives when a TOC changes, such is the nature of our privatised railway.

I like the style of the open access operator Grand Central, they have a certain flair and have fought hard for every passenger. Now they have broadened their operations building on their success and operate a number of services to and from the northeast and West Yorkshire. They operate some HSTs and class 180s, both cast-offs from other TOCs. Here at King's Cross, buffer beam 43465 leaves with the 12.53 to Sunderland. In the background, 91110 'Battle of Britain Memorial Flight' has recently arrived propelling the 06.50 from Glasgow central.

180109, HT 10.30 Hull-London King`s Cross (1A93), King`s Cross station
FirstGroup is the parent company of open access operator Hull Trains who started operations on the ECML in 2000. Since this time, they have operated a number of different trains from the highly unsatisfactory class 172 DMUs to a set of Mk.III stock hauled by an 86 and DVT. Today, they operate a fleet of cast-off class 180 Adelantes one of which is seen here arriving at King's Cross. 180109 is just arriving with the 10.30 1A93 from Hull.
