A nip back to town to collect Bertie from the Brompton shop. I then rode accross London to meet my wife and son at Kensington Olympia for the journey home to Milton Keynes.

458531,SW 09.50 London Waterloo-Reading (2C23, RT), Richmond station
South Western Railway's 09.50 Waterloo to Reading arrives at Richmond station formed by 458531. Notice the large advertising hoarding proclaiming the Royal Ascot weekend in two weeks time.

707021, SW 09.58 London Waterloo-Windsor & Eton Riverside (2U23, RT), Richmond station
In its new bright red livery, 707021 arrives at Richmond station in the morning summer sun (but taken the wrong side of it!) working the 09.58 Waterloo to Windsor and Eton Riverside service. I have not yet managed to travel on one of these relatively new class 707s to compare with their AC 700 cousins.

458506, SW 09.12 Reading-London Waterloo (2C24, 2L), London Waterloo station
I travelled on this service from Richmond, the 09.12 from Reading to the end of its journey here at Waterloo's platform twenty four. 458506 was very busy with me having to stand for the entire fifteen minutes and, as can be seen, here, passengers are already boarding for its return working before arriving passengers have even vacated the platform such is the intensive use that modern-day trains like this are subjected to.

450545, stabled, London Waterloo station
Apart from a brief visit yesterday, the last time I was on this platform at Waterloo was in August 2010 to see a theatre production of The Railway Children complete with real-life steam train on the track entering the set! In recent years, the former Eurostar platforms have been reconfigured and now give a much-needed boost to Waterloo's platform capacity even if they are rather long!

Former Motorail terminal, Kensington Olympia
The former Motorail terminal at Kensington Olympia station is still in existence but now used as a carpark largely for visitors to the adjacent Olympia exhibition centre. The terminal opened in 1966 and survived into the late 1980s but I do not know exactly when the service here was finally ended, can anybody advise me?

37884 & 455816, 11.00 Wolverton-Stewart s Lane, Kensington Olympia station
Whilst waiting for our train back to Milton Keynes, the green signal cleared on the southbound line through Kensington Olympia and the familiar sight of 37884 'Cepheus' appeared in the distance. The Rail Operations Group class 37 was towing Southern's 455816 back from Wolverton works to Stewert's Lane depot with it having had scheduled repairs undertaken. This is a regular Saturday morning working with another unit heading north in the afternoon to have work undertaken the over the following week. The class 37s are ideal for such moves given their flexibility and light axle loadings, not bad when one remembers that they are over fifty years old!

377202, SN 12.10 East Croydon-Milton Keynes Central (2M33, 3L), Kensington Olympia station
Our train back to Milton Keynes arrives at Kensington Olympia station. We travelled on the 12.10 Southern service that originated from East Croydon formed by 377202. Notice the young lad on the platform who was also photographing the train on his digital SLR. It's warming to see the young still taking an interest in the railways and that it's not just us old fossils out in all weathers taking photographs!

37611, stabled, Wembley yard
Having just seen one of the Rail Operation Group's Class 37s at Kensington Olympia, on passing Wembley yard another is seen stabled. 37611 'Pegasus' looks very smart in its livery as it waits for its next job. As D6871, it was new in September 1963 becoming 37171 under TOPS ten years later. It became 37690 in 1995 eventually being painted in the DRS compass livery and finally becoming 37611.

66116 & 66566, stabled, Wembley yard
A pair of class 66s in different liveries sit stabled in Wembley yard. Partially out of shot to the left is 66116 in its old EWS livery complete with branding on the cab side, not many still display this with a large DB vinyl normally stuck over the 'big beasties'. In the centre of the shot is 66566 in Freightliner's green livery

Tickets, Kensington Olympia-Milton Keynes Central
Our return tickets from Kensington Olympia to Milton Keynes. It makes a change to travel on a Southern service rather than the more usual London North Western class 350s that are getting a little internally tired.

Oyster card, Richmond-London Waterloo
I used my Oyster card in the morning to get from Richmond to London Waterloo. I then enjoyed a walk to Covent Garden crossing the Thames via the eastern Hungerford bridge. I then collected my Brompton from their shop on Long Acre and rode across London to meet my wife and son at Kensington Olympia. I enjoyed a brief stop at one of my favourite shops, Whole Foods on High Street Kensington where I bought some treats to take home!
