A disappointing day weather wise being cloudy and with a fresh wind blowing found me riding from Castle Cary to Cogload Junction. I set up camp just behind the signal box at Cogload and slept fitfully through what was a wild, wet and stormy night.

50046, 07.30 London Paddington-Penzance (1B24), Castle Cary
Having packed up my camp and secured everything on my bike, 50046 'Ajax' passes Castle Cary with the 1B24 07.30 London Paddington to Penzance working. As can be seen, it was not an inspiring morning with a lot of clouds

50021, 06.24 Penzance-London Paddington, Castle Cary A371 road bridge
Heading the 06.24 Penzance to London Paddington, 50021 'Rodney' prepares for the climb to Brewham Summit, approximately 6 miles of rising gradient, at its steepest 1:79. It is about to pass under the A371/B3153 road bridge just to the west of Castle Cary Station.

50008, 09.35 London Paddington-Pernzance, Charlton Adam ST538292
With just a hint of sun trying to break through the clouds at Charlton Mackrell, passing milepost 122 (from Paddington), with telegraph poles and wires for company, 50008 'Thunderer' heads west with the 09.35 London Paddington to Penzance working. However, this could be a misidentified locomotive. Close examination of the scan shows that the engine is named. But, records state that Thunderer did not receive its name until 1st September 1979, this is a month subsequent to the photograph. So, is this 50008 or not….help anybody?

47485, 08.34 Penzance-London Paddington, Somerton
47485 rattles past the lovely signal box at Somerton heading the 08.34 Penzance to London Paddington. 47485 led a pretty uneventful life only carrying this number and the pre-tops one, D1683. It was an early withdrawal in October 1993 being cut up at Crewe.

50029, 13.48 Plymouth-London Paddington (1A03), Athelney
With the tower of St. Bartholomew’s Church of East Lyng in the background, 50029 'Renown' is about to cross the River Tone and pass the level crossing at Athelney working the 1A03 13.48 Plymouth to London Paddington. 50029 is still operational having been withdrawn in early 1992. It is currently under a protracted restoration at Peak Rail being owned by the Renown Repulse Restoration Group. When I last saw it in 2016, it looked a bit sorry for itself..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/v/photos/21936chg/25743505804/x50029-rowsley-yard

50035, 12.30 London Paddington-Paignton (1B76), Athelney
50035 'Ark Royal' was the first of the class to be named in January 1978. It is seen on a gloomy afternoon leading the 1B76 12.30 London Paddington to Paignton past Athelney. The photograph is taken from the level crossing opposite the former signal box. Ark Royal is owned by the Class 50 Alliance and was the first member of the class to be preserved.

50020, 13.30 London Paddington-Penzance (1B82), Atheleny
Athelney is a small, isolated, linear village that straddles the River Tone at the southern edge of the Somerset Levels. The only road through the village crosses the railway at a level crossing where the signal box was located. 50020 'Revenge' is seen about the rattle the all timber classic GWR design box. The signal box was opened in 1906 following the building of the re-aligned route to Cogload Junction. This was part of the continual efforts by the GWR to shorten distances and speed up timings to the west. When the box was closed in 1985, the top section was carefully removed and now resides at Bishop’s Bridge on the South Devon Railway.
