4644, 14.07 New York Penn-Trenton (3849), Newark International Airport station
We took the train from the dark depths of New York Penn station back to Newark International Airport station. This was the train that we took, the 14.07 Penn to Trenton 3849 service. It was being pushed at the rear by 4644, a German built Bombardier locomotive constructed between 2001 and 2002. This particular one is an AC electric example, there are also some bi-mode versions.

659, unidentified working, Newark International Airport station
An unidentified working heads away from New York passing through Newark International Airport station. The train is being led by one of Amtrak's new Siemens ACS-64 locomotives introduced last year, number 659. These European styled locos. were built at Siemens Sacramento facility are constructed on the EuroSprinter platform. So far, reliability has been good with them having a good future ahead.

4101, 14.12 New York-Hoboken Bay Head (2303), Newark International Airport station
I don't know what it is about American machinery, but it wins no awards in the styling stakes! Like their cars of the 1960s, these GM EMD GP40 locomotives are ugly and cluttered, but could only be an American design. Here, one of the few remaining examples of these 3 000hp locomotives operating for NJ Transit Rail Operations, 4101, is seen pausing at Newark International Airport station with the 14.12 New York Penn to Hoboken Bay Head 2302 service. The size and design was as grand as the noise it made, the thundering of the engines and the screaming turbo chargers were something to behold!

6059, 13.44 Trenton-New York Penn (3850), Newark International Airport station
Constructed entirely from stainless steel a Comet V uint 6059 arrives at Newark International Airport station with the 13.44 Trenton to New York Penn 3850 service. This is effectively a DVT attached to a set of stock with a locomotive doing the work in a push-pull manner at the other end. These units were manufactured by Alstom during 2002 and have been in operation in and around the New York metropolitan area since giving, generally, a good service apart from some issues with their door locking and release mechanism.

Newark International Airport station
There is no confusion as to what station I am at here or for any arriving passengers for that matter! Newark International Airport station was opened in 2001 and exclusively serves the airport. That is that there is no pedestrian access to the station, no busses and no passenger drop-off or collection. The only way in and out (apart from by train) is via the AirTrain monorail that links the station to the airport.

4611, 13.44 Trenton-New York Penn (3850), Newark International Airport station
An ALP-46 number 4611 brings up the rear of the 13.44 Trenton to New York Penn 3850 service. In my limited experience of NJ Transit Rail their trains were clean, on-time and 'functional'. By this, I mean that the interiors were less than luxurious than our trains with vinyl seat coverings and linoleum flooring. To the left in the background is the glass terminal building for the elevated AirTrain to the Newark International airport terminals.

7040, 14.29 New York Penn-Jersey Avenue (3719), Newark International Airport station
One of NJ Transit Rail Operations' multi-level sets number 7040 arrives at Newark International Airport station. There are 643 of these coaches all built by Bombardier with the final set introduced two years ago in 2014. At the back of this 14.29 New York Penn to Jersey Avenue 3719 service would be a locomotive pushing the train; unfortunately I did not record which one was operating on this set.

Tickets, New York Penn-Newark International Airport
Our tickets for the journey from New York Penn station to Newark International Airport, a journey of about thirty minutes. They cost a steep $13 each, a price made worse by the dreadful pound to dollar exchange rate thanks to BREXIT! However, they did include the journey on the AirTrain that took us right into the airport terminal building.
