Our first day in New York found us at Grand Central station for lunch! What a huge station and all totally subterranean. I managed to get on to some platforms but taking pictures was tricky due to the relative darkness.

8136, unidentified working, New York Grand Central station
A Budd built M3A EMU, 8136, waits on the blocks at New York's Grand Central station. Whilst I was able to identify most workings that I photographed, this particular Metro-North Railroad service eluded me.

A Metro-North Railroad's new Kawasaki built class MBs waits on one of Grand Central's incredibly long platforms. 9126 will work the 13.04 to New Haven, a city north east of New York probably best known as being where the Bush family originate from. The fronts of these MB units are awkward and cluttered and do not look to be a brand new train that Metro-North are still taking delivery of.

8136, unidentified working & 4030, unidentified working, New York Grand Central station
The platforms (or tracks as the American's insist on calling them!) of New York's Grand Central station was not a pleasant place to be or an easy place to take photographs. However, in contrast to the UK, there were no barriers and I was able to wander around unchallenged and did not feel that I ought not to be there, very different to how I feel at, say, a busy London terminus. Against the buffers is 8136, a unit constructed in the early 1980s. These units are being withdrawn being replaced by new M9A stock. Next to the Budd unit is 4030, a Bombardier built M7A unit.

Concourse, New York-Grand Central station
Part of the extensive concourse at Grand central station. The entrances to the platforms (tracks) are off to the left. With no barriers or staff to check tickets, access to them was a straightforward affair.

Concourse, New York Grand Central station
An information booth on the concourse of New York's Grand Central station. It was a busy station on a huge scale and quite unlike anything I have experienced elsewhere. On another level, there was a whole floor of eateries. Here my wife, son and I took lunch, all choosing food from a different vendor, many of whom were artisans rather than the usual chains.

Upper concourse, New York Grand Central station
When travellers arrive at Grand Central to travel, they are greeted by this huge and marble clad space. The enormous flag was placed in this spot a few days after the 9/11 attack and has stayed since. Notice my wife and son standing foreground centre right.

Upper concourse, New York Grand Central station
A general view of the Grand Central upper concourse. Opened in 1913 on a site that replaced two previous stations, the main building here at street level features an impressive elliptical barrel-vaulted ceiling. The whole structure has undergone an extensive refurbishment and it now looks absolutely superb. It was a busy place as can be seen in this image, with many people bustling around.

Platforms twenty nine, thirty and thirty one of new York Grand Central station all have trains on them. On tracks thirty one and thirty two are two Bombardier M7A units, 4050 and 4326. The latter is soon to depart with the 13.25 to North White Plains, a district of north east New York. On the far side, 6109, one of the new Kawasaki M8 units, sits on track thirty one.

Frontage, New York Grand Central station
In a New York winter, with the sun so low in the sky, it is difficult to get a picture of Grand Central station due to the high buildings that surround it. Despite that, the 1913 structure stands proudly on East 42nd Street adorned with its seasonal Christmas wreath.

Grand Central station is seen dwarfed by the skyscrapers of downtown New York. When the station was opened in 1913, contemporary pictures show it to be the largest and grandest structure in the neighbourhood. Over the next century, everything has grown around it but it remains doggedly one of the most iconic structures in the city.
