350120, LM 07.54 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (2Y17), Rugby station
A cold and grey morning finds 350120 at Rugby station. This was our first train of the journey to Knaresborough, the 07.54 Euston to Birmingham New Street that we took from Northampton.

350370, LM 09.25 Northampton-Birmingham New Street (2Y09), Rugby station
350370 pauses at Rugby's relatively new platform one with the 09.25 Northampton to Birmingham New Street. We could have caught this train in order to get our connection at Rugby but it would have been a little fine if this train was delayed.

350121, LM 08.46 London Euston-Crewe (1U27), Rugby station
The next leg of our journey to Yorkshire involved a quick dash up the Trent Valley line from Rugby to Tamworth. 350121 arrives at Rugby with the 08.46 Euston to Crewe.

43014, 10.24 Derby RTC-Crewe (via Holyhead), Derby station
On arrival at Derby station, we had another change that gave a brief opportunity to photograph activity at the southern end of the station. The Network Rail measurement train snakes its way out of the station with 43014 'The Railway Observer' at the rear. It was starting out on its day's duty as the 10.24 Derby to Crewe via Holyhead.

20096 & 20107, stabled, Derby station
Two vintage type ones stand stabled at the southern end of Derby station. 20096 and 20107 look smart in their retro. BR blue livery sitting in their default nose to nose formation.

20905 & 20314, stabled, Derby station
The second pair of class 20s at Derby on this cold and bleak morning sit stabled at the southern end of the station. 20905 looks reasonable in its GBRF livery but I am not at all convinced by 20314 in its Harry Needle colour scheme?

170637, XC 10.19 Birmingham New Street-Nottingham (1D57), Derby station
The third train of our rather complicated journey from Northampton to Knaresborough waits at Derby station to leave back out again to complete its journey to Nottingham. We took the 1D57 10.19 ex Birmingham New Street Crosscountry service from Tamworth High Level formed of 170637.

170639, XC 10.41 Nottigham-Birmingham New Street (1G22), Derby station
170639 rattles into Derby station with the 10.41 Nottingham to Birmingham New Street train. Once it has arrived, the driver will change ends and, after a brief stop-over, it will leave in the same direction that it arrived to continue its journey to Birmingham.

170639, XC 10.41 Nottigham-Birmingham New Street (1G22) & 170637, XC 10.19 Birmingham New Street-Nottingham (1D57), Derby station
Double vision at Derby station! To the left, 170639 has arrived with the 10.41 Nottingham to Birmingham new Street whilst to the right, 170637 is about to leave with the 10.19 from New Street to Nottingham. I have mixed views on these class 170s. Whilst they are roomy and have a pleasant ambience, they can be noisy and their ride can be a little unsettled on poor track.

20096 & 20107, stabled 37800, 11.05 Derby Litchurch Lane-Leicester LE, Derby station
37800 lays a smoke screen over the southern end of Derby's station sidings as it positions itself to leave with the 11.05 light engine move to Leicester. In front, 20096 and 20107 are stabled.

220020, XC 08.12 Winchester-Newcastle (1E86), Sheffield station
Our fourth train of our journey to Yorkshire was the CrossCountry 08.12 Winchester to Newcastle working. We took this train from Derby to York. Here in Sheffield, I lighted the train to take a picture of it while waiting on platform one. Notice the stark hulks of the Park Hill flats above the station roof to the right. These were inspired by Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation concept and opened in 1961. However, all was not well with them and by the 1990s they were almost empty and in very poor condition. Having been granted Grade II listed status, they are now being renovated and rebuilt to provide a range of housing to suit the needs of the people of Sheffield, One wonders if they will be a greater success the second time around?

185118, TP 10.22 Liverpool Lime Street-Scarborough (1E84), York station
Having arrived at York, a little late, the sun had put in a appearance and it was turning into a bright, if a little chilly, winter's day. 185118 leaves York station with the 10.22 Liverpool Lime Street to Scarborough. This TPE livery is very similar to FGW's HSTs, not surprising really as they are owned by the same parent group First Group.

Trevor, York station
My working partner and boss, Trevor stands at, 'urhhhh, ummm', York! Notice that the signs are still painted in the famous and recognisable blue of the much lamented GNER operator.

221136, XC 12.14 Darlington-Penzance relief (1Z58), York station
Due to the complete closure of the ECML at Durham dues to an 'incident' all trains were terminating at various location north of York and then returning south again. Here, running as 1Z58, 221136 brings the 12.14 Darlington to Penzance train designated as a relief into York. This type of incident is one that the privatised railway struggles to cope with but one that in BR days would have been handled in a more joined-up manner. However, on this particular occasion, the train planners did a reasonable job of getting trains moving.

150147, NT 13.11 York-Leeds (2C33), York station
The fifth and final train of our trip from Northampton to Knaresborough waits to leave York station. 150147 will work the 13.11 to Leeds that Trevor and I took to Knaresborough.

150147, NT 13.11 York-Leeds, Knaresborough station
The train guard watches me from the rear cab of 150147 as it leaves Knaresborough station working the 13.11 York to Leeds. The train is just about to cross Knaresborough's magnificent viaduct and is passing the interesting North Eastern 1873 signal box that is integrated into the row of stone-built houses.

Tickets, Northampton-Knaresborough
By splitting the tickets for the journey from Northampton to Knaresborough a huge saving was gained. For the two of us, £64 was a reasonable single fare but it does mean a total of fourteen tickets needed printing; how ridiculous!
