The journey home was more successful than the journey up! We arrived back into Northampton with no delays or dramas. I made use of Cross Country's WiFi on the journey from Leeds to Birmingham working on the web site, it all worked fine with no drop-outs.

Concourse, Leeds station
William Henry Hamlyn's 1938 designed station concourse at Leeds has an almost continental look about it. It's a magnificent space that leads to the modern concourse opened in 2008 that itself is having yet another re-build! The retail outlets to the left of this image were once the access to the terminating platforms. Note the new lighting fitted inside the old style art deco fittings.

According to Leeds' station clock, 158903's departure is imminent as the 17.36 to Manchester Victoria. However, 144007 is now a little late with the 17.29 to Knottingley.

158905, NT 16.15 Sheffiled-Leeds (2N23, 2L), Leeds station
158905 has arrived at Leeds station with the 16.15 from Sheffield. It will then sit in the south facing bay platform 10A until it returns as the 17.48 departure. Notice that the crew have already set the destination screen and the headlights ready for its return.

144001, stabled & 144004, NT 17.59 Leeds-Horsforth (2C62, 2L), Leeds station
144001 and 144004 stand side by side at Leeds station. 144001 is stabled and was not showing on RTT as working a train all evening. However, 144004 will work the 17.59 to Horsforth, a very short service of some five miles! Having said this, the train was pretty full when it left stopping at Burley Park, Headingley and Horsforth.

170473, NT 17.57 Leeds-Doncaster (2B27, RT), Leeds station
The last time that I saw this class 170 was at Edinburgh Waverley station. Since then, it has moved south and is now operated by Northern and looks very different in its new livery. 170473 is boarding at platform 10A ready to work the 17.57 to Doncaster. I'll leave you to decide if this is the best use of resources, to operate a diesel unit under the wires to Doncaster.

220029, XC 15.08 Glasgow Central-Plymouth (1V68, 4L), Leeds station
Our train back to Birmingham New Street arrives into Leeds station. 222029 is working the 15.08 Glasgow Central to Plymouth. The service was extremely full here at Leeds with virtually no adherence to the reservations taking place! As the journey progressed it thinned out and we managed to secure a four seat table to ourselves. I made excellent use of CrossCountry's Wifi that worked for the whole journey and enabled me to work on this web site. However, the ride of the train was particularly bad on the section of line between Chesterfield and Derby with the train pitching and swaying alarmingly at times. It made it tricky for me to type on the laptop and induced some mild nausea! Just a further aside, the courteous and informative guard announced several times that there were no refreshments available on the train. On an inter-regioanl train of this nature, this was a very poor show.

350107, LN 20.33 Birmingham New Street-Northampton (2Y56, 1E), Birmingham New Street station
Our final train of the trip, 350107, waits to leave Birmingham New Street. We took this 20.33 Birmingham New Street to Northampton all the way to its destination.

158826, AW 20.09 Birmingham International-Machynlleth (1J31, 1E), Birmingham New Street station
It's a shame that there were so many passengers in the way and that I was in the gloom of Birmingham New Street station as I really wanted a picture of 158826 in its new and very smart Transport for Wales/Gwaith Trafnidiaeth Cymru livery. The class 158 is pausing working the 20.09 Birmingham International to Machynlleth service that was full and standing here at New Street. It seems to have slipped under the radar a bit but we now have two state owned and operated railway companies. On the East Coast, LNER is doing an excellent job, and now in Wales, let's hope that the Welsh Government can do the same with their railway network.

Tickets, Leeds-Northampton
Our return tickets from Leeds to Northampton. Once again, twelve individual tickets for the three of us to complete our journey using the split ticket anomaly. The guard commented on what a farce the whole thing was as he sorted through the tickets!
