43015, GW 10.00 London Paddington-Paignton (1C09), Box, A4 road bridge
43015 emerges from the depths of Box tunnel. The tunnel was opened, without great pomp in 1841, having taken just four years to construct. The west portal, seen here, was completed sometime after the tunnel's opening and is built to a grand classical style, the east portal is more modest being built in brick, both are Grade II listed.

43033, GW 10.30 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads (1C10), Box A4 road bridge
43033 'Driver Brian Cooper 15 June 1957 - 5 October 1999' emerges into the autumn light from Box Tunnel. The 10.30 Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads is doing its best to prune the lineside vegetation, something that Network Rail must address if they want to avoid problems with trains slipping on the tracks at this time of year. Rather than reducing track speeds, sending leaf busters and Sandite trains out, get teams out to remove the source of the problem!

Class 43, GW 11.00 Bristol Temple Meads-London-Paddington (1A14), A4 road bridge, Box
An unidentified class 43 HST forms the 11.00 Bristol Temple Meads to Paddington service past the village of Box. Middle Hill tunnel is in the background with Box's famous tunnel behind me whilts I stand on the A4 road bridge.

43165 & 43137, GW 12.55-Cardiff Central-London Paddington (1L60), Bourton SU234875
One of my favourite spots on the GWML is an occupation bridge that carries a small track and a footpath over the line near the village of Bourton just east of Swindon. However, this spot will soon be spoilt somewhat by the electrification masts the footings of which can be seen next to the leading power car. 43165 'Prince Michael of Kent' and 43137 power the 12.55 1L60 Cardiff Central to Paddington past this lovely spot; I wonder if I will return again?

43036 & 43182, GW 13.15 London Paddington-Cardiff Central (1B37), Bourton SU234875
43036 and 43182 provide the power for the 13.15 Paddington to Cardiff Central 1B37 working. It is seen passing Bourton a short distance east of Swindon. Notice the evidence of works and the 80mph temporary speed restriction associated with the preparations for the electrification process that will ruin this superb view from the quiet occupation bridge.

56302, 13.05 Gloucester Horton Road-Washwood Heath (0Z56), Bourton SU234875
I had seen some gen that this mysterious light engine movement was taking place along the GWML and that it was coinciding with my drive home from Box so I decided to wait and see what it produced. Colas 56302 'Peco The Rail Modeller 2016 70 Years' runs as the 13.05 Gloucester Horton Road to Washwood Heath. I never did discover why this light engine move went via the circuitous route from Gloucester to Birmingham via Didcot and Banbury. It is seen passing Bourton just east of Swindon.
