350260, LM 09.47 Milton Keynes Central-London Euston (2K22), Milton Keynes Central station
350260 waits at Milton Keynes station to work forward as the 09.47 'all stations' stopper to Euston. Whilst the normal London Midland service takes about 40 minutes from here, the stopper takes about an hour and a half.

221118 & 221103, VT 09.10 London Euston-Holyhead (1B83), Milton Keynes Central station
The first leg of our journey to Edinburgh was aboard this train, the 09.10 Euston to Holyhead service that we took as far as Crewe. Here, 221118 and 221103 'Christopher Columbus' arrive at Milton Keynes station. As regular readers will know, I am not a fan of these Voyagers, finding them cramped and particularly noisy; never mind, we only had to endure one for just over an hour or so!

221111, VT 09.30 Barton-under-Needwood-Chester ECS (5D28), Crewe station
221111 'Roald Amundsen' pauses at Crewe station working the 09.30 Barton-under-Needwood to Chester ECS train. I pressure that this 5D28 working was some sort of positioning move following the Voyager receiving attention or undergoing an exam. at its base depot.

57309, stabled, Crewe station
Whilst waiting for our train that would take us from Crewe to Edinburgh, former Virgin Thunderbird 57309 'Pride of Crewe' was receiving some attention. When it was operated by Virgin West Coast this 57 was in a more familiar red livery and named 'Brains'. In a much earlier guise, as 47254, I photographed the locomotive on a PW train stabled in Arle loop at Cheltenham in March 1985.

At Crewe station, the rear of the 08.55 Holyhead to Euston is seen with a passenger's needs being attended to by train and platform crew. The service is being worked by 221109 'Marco Polo'.

175011, AW 10.30 Manchester Piccadilly-Milford Haven (1V39), Crewe station
175011 pauses at Crewe's platform six working the 1V39 10.30 Manchester Piccadilly to Milford Haven. In this view, the roof of Crewe's station can be clearly seen. It's a complicated station that has undergone many changes over the years. With the possible arrival of HS3 at some time in the distant future things will change again, this time on a pretty massive scale!

390047, VT 08.43 London Euston-Edinburgh (9S54), Crewe station
Our second train of the day, that took us all the way to Edinburgh, arrives at Crewe's platform eleven. The 08.43 Euston to Edinburgh was worked by 390047 and we enjoyed a spectacular journey in it to the Scottish capital. Note the passengers equipped for an overnight stay outdoors, and there were many more. They alighted at Warrington Bank Quay as they were attending the Creamfilelds festival at nearby Dearsbury. The headline acts this year were Calvin Harris, Avicii and Tiësto.

37057, stabled NR test train, Carlisle High Wapping sidings
Looking absolutely superb, 37057 (D6757) sits at the rear of a Network Rail test train in Carlisle's High Wapping sidings south of the station just in front of the PSB that is just out of sight to the right.
