1704527, SR 12.15 Edinburgh Waverley-Glasgow Queen Street (1R51), Edinburgh Waverley station
170427 will leave platform 17 at Edinburgh Waverley station at 12.15 with the 1R81 service to Glasgow Queen Street. This service will travel via Polmont and Falkirk High to get reach Glasgow in just under an hour. In the coming few months, this service will go over to electric power as the masts continue their relentless march across Scotland including this route.

334037, SR 12.06 Edinburgh Waverley-Milngavie (2M19), Edinburgh Waverley station
ScotRail are the only operators of the forty three-car 334s that are part of the Juniper family. They were built in the early 2000s and have gone through two refurbishment programmes since then. At Waverley station, 334037 is leaving platform eleven with the 12.06 to Milngavie a journey that takes it through Bathgate and then through the middle of Glasgow via Central Low Level station before heading north out of the city to its destination.

221129, XC 11.00 Glasgow Central-Penzance (1V62), Edinburgh Waverley station
Passengers board CrossCoutry's 221129 as it prepares to continue its journey as the 1V62 11.00 Glasgow central to Penzance. This gargantuan 621mile journey takes a roundabout route leaving Glasgow and going east before then heading sort of south and then west to Penzance. Pity any poor soul who would be making this journey in its entirety on an awful Voyager!

158723, 12.24 Edinburgh Waverley-Tweedbank (2T82), Edinburgh Waverley station
158723 sits in the afternoon sunshine at Edinburgh Waverley about to work the 12.24 to Tweedbank. This was the train that I took along the length of the Borders Railway that opened just over a year ago in September 2015.

08956, stabled, Craigentinny MP
08956 is seen stabled at Craigentinny depot just east of Edinburgh. Now painted in a black livery with Wabtec branding the shunter was released from Darlington Works in 1962 spending its BR career on the Eastern Region.

73966 stabled, Craigentinny MPD
My first view of one of Caledonian Sleeper's new and rebuilt class 73 locomotives. These veteran machines were completely rebuilt by Brush at Loughborough with all their previous DC electrical equipment removed and a new Cummins diesel engine installed. Caledonian Sleeper have invested in these locomotives so they can replace the class 37s and the class 67s that they uses to haul their services away from the wires to Fort William, Inverness and Aberdeen. They are currently undergoing testing on these lines. In between its testing, 73966 sits stabled at Craigentinny depot.

158786, stabled, Tweedbank station
The driver is just seen boarding 158786 at Tweedbank station. The ScotRail unit had been sitting at the present terminus of the recently opened Borders Railway and would soon be returning to Edinburgh. The station at Tweedbank is a fair way from anywhere particular being halfway between the towns of Melrose and Galashiels. However, as a park and ride location, it is ideal and is proving a popular starting point for commuters and leisure travellers alike if the passenger numbers for the line are to be believed.

158714, SR 12.53 Edinburgh Waverley-Tweedbank (2T84), Tweedbank station
158714 stands at Tweedbank having arrived with the 12.53 from Edinburgh Waverley. Facilities at the present terminus of the line are a little basic and the station is a little bare. Whilst on a summer's day, such as this, it was perfectly adequate, in the middle of a Scottish winter, it would not be a very pleasant place to wait for a train!

158714, SR 13.59 Tweedbank-Edinburgh Waverley (2T85), Tweedbank station
With the Roman fortified round hill known as Eildon Hill North in the background, 158714 waits to leave Tweedbank station with the 13.59 to Edinburgh Waverley. I took this train the short distance to Galashiels, the next station. Here, I alighted and spent a short while exploring the town and getting a spot of lunch.

158707, SR 14.28 Tweedbank-Edinburgh Waverley (2T87), Galashiels station
158707 arrives into Galashiels station with the 14.28 Tweedbank to Edinburgh Waverley. I travelled on this 2T87 service all the way back. The ride was very smooth and the journey was very photogenic. This line has proved to be very popular in its first year of opening and a compelling case is building to continue it further to once again link with the WCML just north of Carlisle.

221137, XC 17.08 Edinburgh Waverley-Bristol Temple Meads (1V71), Edinburgh Waverley station
A sunny platform four at Edinburgh Waverley sees 221137 being boarded by passengers. It will work the 17.08 to Bristol Temple Meads via Newcastle service that arrives at its destination at 23.40

334017, SR 16.48 Edinburgh Waverley-Helensburgh Central (2H59) & 43251, GR 12.00 London King`s Cross-Inverness (1S16), Edinburgh Waverley station
To the left, 334017 is about to leave Edinburgh Waverley with the 16.48 to Helensburgh Central. Meanwhile, there appears to be a lot of passengers on platform eleven for the 12.00 King's Cross to Inverness. The rear power car, 43251, is just coming up for 40 years old being built at Crewe Works in 1977 for the Western Region originally being part of 253025.

Tickets, Edinburgh Waverley-Tweedbank-Edinburgh Waverley
My tickets for the trip down the Borders Railway, £11.20 is not bad for a walk-on off-peak return. I recommend a trip on this line, it goes through some beautiful countryside and is an enjoyable afternoon run.
