43296, GR 12.00 London King`s Cross-Inverness (1S16), Edinburgh Waverley station
43296 arrives at Edinburgh Waverley with the 12.00 King's Cross to Inverness. I am standing on platform one waiting for the arrival of the afternoon's ScotRail Border's Railway steam special but looking at the sun, I am not really in the best place....plan B?

43239, GR 13.47 Aberdeen-London King`s Cross (1E23), Edinburgh Waverley station
With the 12.00 King's Cross to Inverness having just vacated platform 2, within a few minutes the 13.47 Aberdeen to King's Cross arrives. 43239 is the leading power car. This was seen earlier in the morning working to Aberdeen almost at the same spot from the footbridge that can be seen up the platforms. At about the time I was taking this image I was asked for my ticket to travel on the steam special and informed that I had to leave this platform as I did not have one. Now, I am an awkward so-and-so and refused that caused quite a stir as I don't think that they were expecting this response. I was informed that the station supervisor would be summoned to deal with me. I moved off before this happened (if it did) because the sun and light would both be completely wrong for photographing the steam special.

43239 leads the 13.47 Aberdeen to London King's Cross HST service away from Edinburgh Waverley. I am standing at the far end of the long and remote platform seven. The skyline is dominated by the huge five star Balmoral Hotel that was originally built as the North British Station Hotel.

43299, GR 13.47 Aberdeen-London King s Cross (1E23), Edinburgh Waverley station
In lovely late summer light, 43299 brings up the rear of the 13.47 Aberdeen to King's Cross as it leaves Edinburgh Waverley station taken from the end of the very long platform eleven/seven combination that I believe is now considerably over 300 metres. From the end of this platform, there is now a clear view of the single-bore Calton Tunnels that are a cause of congestion to the eastern end of the busy station.

46100, outward leg of ScotRail Border`s Railway steam special, 16.46 Edinburgh Waverley-Tweedbank (1Z24), Edinburgh Waverley station
46100 'Royal Scot' leaves Edinburgh Waverley with the second Border's Railway steam hauled special of the day, the 16.46 to Tweedbank. It has been an inspired move by ScotRail to operate these specials that have been well loaded with a mix of tourists, locals and enthusiasts alike. It has promoted the Border's Railway, that opened last year, and has contributed towards is healthy usage numbers that have been beyond the projections.

46100, outward leg of ScotRail Border`s Railway steam special, 16.46 Edinburgh Waverley-Tweedbank (1Z24), Edinburgh Waverley station
46100 'Royal Scot' leads the 16.46 Edinburgh to Tweedbank away from Waverley about to enter Calton North tunnel. 46100 is owned by the The Royal Scot Locomotive and General Trust along with a number of other superb icons of the steam age. 'Royal Scot' was built in 1927 by LMS for London to Glasgow express services, something it did until withdrawal in October 1962. After withdrawal, the loco. became famous for being a static display at Butlins in Skegness for many years. After moving to the Bressingham Steam Museum and a brief period in steam it went through an extensive overhaul and returned to the mainline last year in 2015.

67008 brings up the rear of the 16.46 Edinburgh Waverley to Tweedbank Border's Railway steam special. Already through Calton Tunnel 46100 'Royal Scot' was leading the train. On arrival at Tweedbank, the class 67 would then lead the return train arriving back into Waverley at just after 21.30
