350117, LM 07.16 Northampton-Birmingham New Street (2Y57) & 350374, LM 07.37 Northampton-Birmingham New Street (2Y05), Northampton station
Two Birmingham New Street trains stand at Northampton's platforms four and five. To the left, 350117 will work the 07.17 to New Street whilst 350374 is at the back of the 07.37 service. These platforms were brought back into use about fifteen years ago having been closed for passenger use after their role as parcel platforms ended.

90039 & 90019, 02.32 Dollands Moor-Irvine paper mill (6S94), Northampton station
A working that passes through Northampton once a week is the WO 02.32 Dollands Moor to Irvine paper mill china clay working. It usually runs on a Wednesday and returns on a Friday but the usual rules apply! Here, 90039 and 90019 'Multimodal' haul the heavy train through the station on its journey north to Scotland.

90019 & 90039, 02.32 Dollands Moor-Irvine paper mill (6S94), Northampton station
90019 'Multimodal' and 90039 draws the 02.32 Dollands Moor to Irvine paper mill china clay working through Northampton station. You could almost smell the fresh paint from 90019 resplendent in its new DB livery. Whilst this train is often double-headed, I did wonder if 90019 was on a proving run after have been to the workshops with 90039 as insurance?

350108, LM 06.35 Northampton-Crewe (2U21) & 350127, LM 07.16 Northampton-Birmingham New Street (2Y57), Northampton station
To the left, 350108 waits to leave Northampton with the 06.35 to Crewe. I took this train as far as Rugby for my onward connection to Birmingham. Next to it is 350127 that will leave platform four with the 07.16 to Birmingham New Street.

57304, stabled Thunderbird, Rugby station
57304 'Pride of Cheshire' is seen stabled at Rugby. It is pretty common to see a DRS class 57 stabled at Rugby ready to undertake Thunderbird duties should there be a failure of a Pendolino or Voyager on the busy WCML.

90039 & 90019, 02.32 Dollands Moor-Irvine paper mill (6S94), Rugby station
Having seen the 6S94 02.32 Dollands Moor to Irvine paper mill china clay working earlier at Northampton, and having overtaken it, I could not resist another picture! Here it is seen passing Rugby with 90039 and a very bright 90019 'Multimodal' leading.

390047, VT 06.20 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G02), Birmingham New Street Station
This is the train that I took from Rugby to Birmingham New Street, the 06.20 ex. Euston. The train was worked by 390047 the set that undertook the speed record attempt between Glasgow and Euston on 22nd September 2006.

170511, LM 07.57 Birmingham New Street-Walsall (2A05), Birmingham New Street station
During peak times, London Midland does not have enough electric units to cover all its services so it has to call in some diesels to work under the wires. Here, 170511 has just arrived at New Street with the 2A05 07.57 from Walsall.

170105, XC 05.15 Cambridge-Birmingham New Street (1N40), Birmingham New Street station
In the pouring rain, 170105 arrives at Birmingham New Street with the 05.15 CrossCountry service from Cambridge. For once, I was grateful to be sheltering under the roof of the station usually being happier to out on the exposed platform ends at New Street.

170507, LM 07.59 Birmingham New Street-Hereford (1V22), Birmingham New Street station
As the weather was so foul, I opted for a going away shot under the station roof at Birmingham New Street. It shows 170507 leaving working the 07.59 New Street to Hereford a train that was routed via Droitwich, Worcester Foregate Street and Malvern.

390123, VT 06.43 London Euston-Edinburgh (9S44), Birmingham New Street station
390123 is being readied for departure from Birmingham New Street as the 9S24 06.43 Euston to Edinburgh. An unusual train as it takes the West Midlands route rather than the more common Trent valley line.

220016, XC 06.02 Guildford-Newcastle (1E79) & 390123, VT 06.43 London Euston-Edinburgh (9S44), Birmingham New Street station
My train north to Darlington arrives at Birmingham New Street as the 1E79 06.02 Guildford to Newcastle. To the extreme left is the tail end of 390123 that is about to leave with the 06.43 Euston to Edinburgh service. At the top left hand side of the image is Birmingham's instantly recognisable Rotunda tower. It is now used as student accommodation. I remember it in the 1970s having the famous Double Diamond neon adverts running round the top whilst I was spotting on the platform end.

142017, NT 12.32 Darlington-Saltburn (2D32), Darlington station
Currently showing 'not in service' on its destination blind, 142017 sits in one of Darlington's up facing platforms. A little later in the afternoon, it will work the 2D32 12.32 to Saltburn.

185120, TP 11.10 Newcastle-Liverpool Lime Street (1F67), Darlington station
TPE 185120 pauses under Darlington's grand train shed with the 11.10 Newcastle to Liverpool Lime Street. I really like Darlington station, it's well maintained and has a nice atmosphere. It's a shame that the dreaded barriers have been installed.

142020, NT 11.25 Bishop Auckland-Saltburn (2D30), Darlington station
The final leg of my journey to Eaglescliffe was taken on one of Northern's finest! 142020 arives into Darlington station working the 11.25 Bishops Auckland to Saltburn. I 'nodded' in this unit the relatively short distance to my destination.

142070, NT 11.30 Saltburn-Darlington (2D21), Eaglescliffe station
On arrival at Eaglescliffe station, 142070 was sitting at the other platform with the 11.30 Saltburn to Darlington. The single island platform station has had some money spent on it in recent years. Last year the heated waiting room was opened and it now has a privately operated (in Partnership with Northern) ticket office.

66588, 10.27 Leeds FLT-Tees Dock (4N01), Eaglescliffe station
To the southern end of Eaglescliffe station there is a junction. Off to the the right is the line to Darlington via the infamous Teeside Airport station. In this image, 66588 is leading the 4N01 10.27 Leeds FLT to Tees Dock Freightliner off the line that diverges from the ECML at Northallerton.

Low Gates signal box (BR, 1956)
Low gates signal box was opened by British railways in 1956. It replaced the original box on the opposite side of the line. It took on added importance in 1960 when it took over control of Northallerton East Junction. Whilst the level crossing in the foreground looks quiet it was in-fact a very busy road and getting a vehicle-free picture was a challenge!

185116, TP 13.27 Middlesborough-Manchester Airport (1P43), Low Gates level crossing
Slowing for its stop at Northallerton station, 168116 approaches the outskirts of the town at Low Green level crossing. It is forming the 1P43 13.27 Middlesborough to Manchester Airport service.

180107, GC 11.21 London King’s Cross-Sunderland (1N92), Low Gates level crossing
180107 accelerates away from Northallerton station and the ECML as it works the 1N92 11.21 King's Cross to Sunderland. It is about to cross Low Gates level crossing where the busy A167 road crosses the line. Indeed, as the TPE service had just passed, it can be seen in the distance, the gates had been down for some time and a heck of queue of traffic had built up.

220033, XC 09.45 Reading-Newcastle (1E32), Northalleton station
In very flat lighting, 220033 speeds through Northallerton station forming the 1E32 09.45 Reading to Newcastle service. Northallerton station has a complicated layout of tracks with a pair of avoiding lines away behind the trees in the background. It is also the point where the Redmire branch diverges from the ECML, this line is the home of The Wensleydale heritage line.

220028, XC 13.35 Newcastle-Guildford (1O40), Otterington SE380879
220028 is probably going at full line speed here on the ECML past Otterington between Thirsk and Northallerton. The CrossCountry Voyager is working the 13.35 Newcastle to Guildford.

Otterington signal box (LNER, 1933) (Preserved)
The preserved Otterington signal box next to the ECML. The station building to the left and the box were built by the LNER in 1932 when the lines were quadrupled necessitating the demolition of the original station. Allegedly the box contains a fully operational frame but this is from another closed box. The station, box and weigh bridge house are all Grade two listed, see..... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-46618992

Tickets, Northampton-Eaglescliffe
These are the tickets that I used to get from Northampton to Eaglescliffe! A total of six tickets made up the journey and by splitting them as I did I saved a small fortune. The only minor inconvenience was that on the Voyager leg of the journey from Birmingham to Darlington I had to change seats four times due to four different reservations!
