19. Trip to Prestwick-20.04.16

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2016 > 19. Trip to Prestwick-20.04.16
Our second attempt to get to Prestwick. My boss and I made this extraordinary journey in order to collect a car for one of our customers. So it was that we drove a very average 2002 Rover 45 all the way back from Scotland!

350121, LM 06.16 Northampton-Birmingham New Street (2Y55), Northampton station
At a silly hour of the morning, 350121 waits to take us to Rugby forming the 06.16 Northampton to Birmingham New Street. This service should, hopefully, connect with the first Glasgow Pendolino of the day that will whisk us all the way to Central station.

350105, LM 06.18 Northampton-London Euston (1N78), Northampton station
With a strange early morning light being picked up on the glass wall of Northampton's new station, 350105 waits to leave, with another member of the class, as the 1N78 06.18 Northampton to Euston.

390001, VT 05.30 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S37), Glasgow Central station
390001 'Virgin Pioneer' has stopped at the blocks of Glasgow Central station's platform one having arrived with the first down Anglo Scottish express of the day, the 05.30 from Euston. We travelled on this service from Rugby, a journey time of nearly four hours made in relative comfort courtesy of Mr. Branson.

Two up services wait to leave a sunny Glasgow Central station. To the left, 390123 is nearly ready to go with the 10.40 1M11 to London Euston. To the right, 350402 will leave in about thirty minutes time with the 11.09 to Manchester Airport.

Old and new adjacent to each other at Glasgow Central station. To the left is 156499, built in the late 1980s and to the right is 380018 that was introduced in 2010. The class 156 has arrived with the 06.46 from Newcastle whilst the class 380 is about to leave with the 2G71 10.36 to Gourock.

Concourse, Glasgow Central station
Part of the magnificent timber fronted buildings that surround the concourse of the superb Glasgow Central station. This particular part acted as a restaurant for the Grande Central Hotel. It is now seeing a new use as Champagne Central. As the name suggests, it is a champagne bar that looks to be somewhat 'high end' judging by its website! As a non-drinker I may not have enjoyed the fizz on-sale but I would have appreciated the views from the window seats!

Frontage, Glasgow Central station
The imposing frontage of Glasgow Central station as it was rebuilt between 1901 and 1905 when the original station was deemed inadequate. The Caledonian Railway employed the renowned Scottish architect Robert Rowand Anderson to design the structure. The western end of the station is dominated by the Grand central Hotel that sits at the junction of Argyle Street and Oswald Street. With its fortunes having waxed and waned over the years, it is no firmly open for business for those who wish to experience its four star luxury. I took a photograph during my 1984 Railrover taken in the same position as this and, apart from the taxi being an Austin Ambassador rather than a VW Passat, very little has changed!

314215, SR 11.12 Glasgow Central-Paisley Canal, Glasgow Central station
314215 waits to leave Glasgow Central with the 11.12 to Paisley Canal. These veteran 1979 class 314s are on borrowed time now with ScotRail having ordered a fleet of new units that will precipitate their withdrawal.

380013, SR 11.04 Glasgow Central-Ayr (2K71), Glasgow Central station
In lovely spring sunshine, 380013 waits at Glasgow Central's platform 14 to work the 2K71 11.04 to Ayr. My boss and I took this train as far as Prestwick Town. This was my first experience of these relatively new units. Whilst I appreciated their rapid acceleration and wi-fi facilities the ride was not very impressive. It could have been the track in the south west suburbs of Glasgow but there was a kind of 'hunting' feeling?

Class 314, 156 & 380, unidentified workings, Glasgow Central station
The famous throat at Glasgow Central station where all the running lines enter the station over the Caledonian Railway Bridge that spans the River Clyde. Three different classes of unit are seen with a class 156 arriving whilst a class 314 and a class 380 run out of the station side-by-side.

380115, SR 10.08 Gourock-Glasgow Central (2G26), Glasgow Central station
380115 enters Glasgow Central station with the 2G26 10.08 from Gourock. This image clearly shows off the glazing that makes up the entire roof of Central station making it the light and airy place that it is. In 1998 Railtrack embarked on a five-year reconstruction programme when the whole roof was removed and re-glazed.

Class 220, XC 11.00 Glasgow Central-Penzance (1V62), Glasgow Central station
The CrossCountry 1V62 leaves Glasgow Central embarking on its epic 593 mile journey as the 11.00 to Penzance. I am not at all sure that I would want a ticket on this train, a class 220 all the way to Penzance would not be a pleasurable experience!

380114, SR 11.52 Ayr-Glasgow Central (1K28), Prestwick Town station
Having arrived at Prestwick Town, I turned my camera round to capture 380114 leaving with the 11.52 Ayr to Glasgow Central. In the background, the buildings of Prestwick Airport can be clearly seen. This has its own station opened in 1994 and remains Scotland's only station that is directly linked to an airport facility. I am not sure what the black smoke drifting in from the left was, but its originating from somewhere on Troon Golf Club.

Frontage, Prestwick Town station
The frontage of Prestwick Town station. It was opened by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway in 1839. Today, it is one of the few stations on the Ayr coast route that is staffed. It was renamed Town station when the Airport station opened in 1994.

Annbank Junction & ground frame
On our drive back home in the lovely Rover 45, we were stopped by some traffic lights on a railway bridge in the village Mossblown. I persuaded my boss to give me a minute or two and managed to get a shot of Annback Junction below the bridge complete with ground-frame and a semaphore. This junction is where the Killoch Colliery line diverges from the Newton Junction to Mauchline line. The latter sees a regular freight flow but I'm not too sure about the former which I believe has been mothballed.

Mauchline signal box (GSW, 1877)
I persuaded my boss to make a small diversion even though we had a pretty major journey ahead of us in a 2002 Rover 45! After parking in a cemetery car park and walking across a field this was the best shot that I could secure of Mauchline signal box. The box is on the Glasgow and South Western Railway trunk route that runs from Carlisle up to Glasgow via Dumfries. The box was originally designated as Number One with the other one closing in 1970 at the same time that the Newton-on-Ayr line was singled. It is built to the GSW's in-house design and was opened in 1877.
