On our last full day, we tripped off to Southport to sample its delights. Then, after bidding farewell to my wife and son, I headed home on my own to attend a family funeral next day.

Having arrived at Southport station, I turned the camera back round to photograph the train we travelled in on from Liverpool Central. 507006 has terminated with the 09.51 from Hunt's Cross.

Pier train, Southport Pier
The pier train makes its way along Southport Pier. This train replaced the battery powered trams that were introduced in 2005 following extensive refurbishment of the pier between 2000 and 2002. Unfortunately, the trams were withdrawn and sold due to cost cutting measures by the local authority in 2015.

Two Northern Train workings wait at Southport station. To the left is 150110 that will work the 14.51 to Manchester Victoria. To the right is 156423 that will leave half an hour or so later with the 15.23 to Manchester Airport. Both trains will take the former Lancashire and Yorkshire route via Parbold to Wigan.

507027, MR 15.58 Southport-Hunts Cross (2U38) & 156455, NT 15.23 Southport-Manchester Airport (2U38), Southport station
Southport station is an impressive terminus serving the popular seaside town. Even though it has experienced considerable rationalisation losing some of its excursion platforms at the far side, it still sees regular services to Manchester and to Merseyside. 507027 waits at platform two with the 15.58 to Hunt's Cross whilst 156455 will leave from platform four with the 15.23 to manchester Airport.

Southport station was extensively refurbished in 2006 and 2007 that cost a whopping £3.6million. However, the station remains a pleasant, airy and clean place to be that handles over four million passenger per year. Taken from the open door of 507009 waiting to leave with the 14.58 to Hunt's Cross, 507027 is on the adjacent platform. This unit will work the following 15.23 also to Hunt's Cross.

350376, LM 15.36 Birmingham New Steet-Liverpool Lime Street (1F49), Liverpool Lime Street station
No sooner had one London Midland train left Liverpool Lime Street for Birmingham, 350376 arrived at the same platform with the 15.36 ex. New Street inbound service.

Trans Pennine Express' 185121 arrives into Liverpool Lime street with the terminating 14.06 from Newcastle. An interesting route that crosses the northern part of the country linking two of its principle cities.

390042, VT 15.07 London Euston-Liverpool Lime Street (1F19), Liverpool Lime Street station
The tail end of 390042 'City of Bangor/Dinas Bangor' at Lime street station having just arrived with the 1F19 15.07 from London Euston. In the background, the platforms of Lime Street look surprisingly quiet given it is just about peak hour time.

390042, VT 17.47 Liverpool Lime Street-London Euston (1A60), Liverpool Lime Street station
390042 'City of Bangor/Dinas Bangor' is being prpaerared to work the 17.47 to London Euston at Lime Street station. Its cast nameplate looks very smart on the side and is in the best traditions of nameplates unlike the vinyls increasingly being stuck to the sides of trains. I took this Virgin service as far as Stafford.

350124 & 350104, LM 16.46 London Euston-Crewe (1U43) & class 390, VT 17.56 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A61), Stafford station
A class 390 takes the centre road through Stafford station working the 17.56 1A61 from Manchester Piccadilly to Euston. It is passing 350124 and 350104 waiting to leave with the 16.46 Euston to Crewe. Despite it being getting on for nearly 19.00 the light is beginning to fade but I have broken the most heinous of photographic rules, namely taking into the light!

350113, LM 18.02 Crewe-London Euston (1U42), Stafford station
350113 has arrived at Stafford's platform one with the 18.02 from Crewe. Having taken nearly an hour to cover the first part of its journey, the Desrio will now run 'fast' via Colwich and the Trent Valley line to Euston. I travelled on this train from Stafford to Milton Keynes.

Ticket, Liverpool Central-Southport-Liverpool Central
Our Merseyrail family day ticket that was used by the three of us for our return journey to Southport. £10 is pretty good value for a 'hop on-hop off' unlimited travel ticket.
Tickets, Liverpool Lime Street-Milton Keynes Central
My ticket from Lime Street to Milton Keynes. By splitting the ticket at Stafford, I was able to save a reasonable sum of money.
