I had an hour or so observing the comings and goings at Lime Street. Then, I took a return trip to Ormskirk whilst my wife and son explored the delights of Liverpool ONE!

Trans Pennine Express operate a fleet of 51 these class 185s that were introduced in 2006. They have proved to be reliable and dependable units but there are discussions about their replacement, possibly with loco. hauled trains? 185138 has just arrived Lime Street with the 10.41 from York.

As the march of electrification continues throughout the north west, these second generation DMUs are an endangered species. Here, 150215 arrives with the 2F91 12.16 from Manchester Oxford Road. Also, another endangered species is the old 1960s signalling that is due to be swept away in the coming couple of years.

158877 & 158870, EM 07.57 Norwich-Liverpool Lime Street (1R70), Liverpool Lime Street station
Having traversed the country, East Midlands' 158877 and 158870 arrive at Liverpool Lime Street with the 07.57 from Norwich. Whilst I'm no fan of long distance journeys by units, these 158s are not too bad giving a reasonable ride and having comfy and roomy seating.

142092 arrives at Ormskirk station with the 2F06 16.35 from Preston. This is a basic shuttle service that operates throughout the day along some ageing track with some equally ageing infrastructure.

The Pacers cannot be used after December 2019 due to their non-compliance with the Persons of Reduced Mobility Technical Specification for Interoperability (PRM-TSI) rules. Here is evidence of the problem as a customer has to helped on to the train using a ramp. Further more, once on the train, wheelchair customers are unable to access the toilets. 142092 will have to come out of service before the deadline, here it waits at Ormskirk station ready to work the 17.09 service to Preston.

508137, MR 16.40 Liverpool Central-Ormskirk (2O42), Derby Street bridge, Ormskirk
One of Merseyrail's veteran class 508s arrives at Orsmkirk. 508137 is about to go under the Derby Street bridge with the 16.40 from Liverpool Central. The trackbed of the former down line that was removed when the line was 'chopped' in half can be seen to the right.

508137, MR 16.40 Liverpool Central-Ormskirk (2O42), Derby Street bridge, Ormskirk
Orsmkirk station was 'split' in 1970 following the withdrawal of direct Liverpool to Preston trains via Rufford. This crazy situation still exists today but there is continued talk of plans to overcome and improve this rather silly situation. The buffers marking the divide between the Merseyrail and Northern lines can be seen just in front of 508137 that has just arrived with the 16.40 from Liverpool Central.

508137, MR 17.20 Ormskirk-Liverpool Central (2G23), Ormskirk station
My train back from Ormskirk waits to leave its start station. Despite their age, these 508 units still look smart, but they have undergone some major improvements and overhauls in their lifetime. Their time is now limited as new stock has been ordered and will be introduced in the next three years or so. 508137 will work the 17.20 from Ormskirk to Liverpool Central.
