The journey there was a little convoluted so as to comply with the cheapest split-ticket fares; but who was I to complain? We went from Milton Keynes rather than our usual Northampton as I was having to return earlier than my wife and son, this made things easier.

390128, VT 10.20 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H18), Stoke-on-Trent station
Having travelled up from Milton Keynes, 3980128 'City of Preston' waits at Stoke-on-Trent to continue its journey to Manchester Piccadilly as the 10.20 from Euston. This view does not show Stoke station's glazed train shed off to best effect. Whilst it's not the most appealing from this angle, the rest of the station is quite impressive being built by the North Staffordshire Railway Company opened in 1849.

390047 arrives at Stoke station working the 11.15 Manchester Piccadilly to Euston. The remaining centre track was removed in 2009 when the platforms were extended. It does mean that the station looks a little less important than it should be give the size of the structure.

As 390047 comes to a halt at Stoke-on-Trent station. The war memorial, with brass nameplates (out of sight behind the train) naming the employees of the North Staffordshire Railway who fell during World War I is seen discreetly flanking the entrance to platform one. This memorial, along with the rest of the station, was restored after it fell into severe disrepair in the late 1990s.

08737, stabled, Crewe Yard
08737 is back very close to where it was built in 1960 being stabled just south of Crewe station. This shunter had a career that saw it move many times being in use from Polmadie in Edinburgh to Eastleigh! It looks a bit sorry for itself here at Crewe, but I am not sure what future it now has ahead of itself?

323235 leaves Crewe station taking the North Junction as it heads off with the 12.34 to Manchester Piccadilly. There is talk of these units being replaced on this route as a cascade takes place from Thameslink.

350231, LM 11.36 Birmingham New Street-Liverpool Lime Street (1F41), Crewe station
350231 leaves Crew station with the London Midland 11.36 Birmingham New Street to Liverpool Lime Street. Despite many re-builds, Crewe station still remains somewhat messy and a little chaotic as in this view. It is likely that it is going to see another huge programme of development if HS3 comes to fruition?

22115 pauses at Crewe forming the 12.35 Chester to Euston service. Unfortunately, it has stopped so the rear car is inconveniently directly under Crewe's northern footbridge that also carries Nantwich Road over the station and the station'e entrance.

When the sun shines, the lighting inside Lime Street is superb. At this time, some works were being undertaken to extend and change platform configurations.

Tickets, Milton Keynes Central-Liverpool Lime Street
Nobody could argue with the fare for this journey from Milton Keynes to Lime Street for the three of us. Less than £20 is fantastic value but, they were advanced, railcard discounted tickets. But, it shows what can be done if you are knowledgeable enough to be able to book tickets like this.
