My friend and neighbour Jo and I went to Salisbury for the day with my mum and dad. I am not sure as to the purpose of our visit but all that I do know that it was a glorious September day and that we traveled down in our family car, a delft blue Triumph Dolomite, KPG 280P.

33016, 10.10 Exeter St. Davids-London Waterloo (1O10), Salisbury station
33016 enters Salisbury under a perfect clear blue sky with the 1O10 10.10 Exeter St. David’s to London Waterloo. Salisbury West signal box can be seen in this image complete with it large air tank that powers the pneumatic power signaling system that was installed by the L&SWR when the station was re-built and the signaling replaced between 1901 and 1902.

33021 & 33047, 09.20 Brighton-Exeter-St.-Davids (1V61), Salisbury station
33021 and 33027 double head the 1V61 09.20 Brighton to Exeter St. David’s train as it leaves Salisbury. It will travel up the L&SWR /GWR lines as far as Wilton Junction where it will diverge to the left and take the Wessex route to Exeter via Yeovil Junction. These Brighton workings were usually double headed by 33s but later on class 50s could also work them. Notice in this picture, Salisbury West signal box can be seen along with some of its associated signalling. Whilst I was on the platform end, I noticed an abandoned signal arm with a pile of rubbish over to the left of this image where the canary yellow BR vans are parked. I made some enquiries and ended up doing deal for £5 to buy it. The following week, my mum kindly went to salisbury after she had finished work in Warminster and picked it up for me. Some 40 years later I still have that signal arm and it is proudly displayed in my garden, see the image at the end of this section.

33009, 11.00 London Waterloo-Exeter St. Davids (1V11) & 33032, stabled, Salisbury station
33009 leaves Salisbury station with the 1V11 11.00 Waterloo to Exeter St. David’s working. Behind it and to the left is Salisbury’s resident station pilot shunter 08031 is seen. 33032 is also to the right basking in the afternoon sunshine occupying the siding next to virtually empty station car park.

1131 & 33032, stabled, Salisbury station
Taken by leaning over the fence from the empty station car park, 33032 is seen stabled in the siding. Next to it on the bay platform 5 or ‘Salisbury 5’ as the running-in sign states, is a Southern Region DEMU 1131. I really liked these units and particularly the noise that they made from their English Electric 4SRKT Mk. II engines. This particular 1962 set became 205031 and then 930301 after conversion to a Sandite unit.

Salisbury signal arm
I paid the grand total of £5 for this signal arm that originated somewhere around Salisbury west; that was a lot of pocket money in 1978! However, I still have it today and here it is attached to my garden fence on-display so I suppose it was money well spent over 40 years on!
