67. MML-10.10.18

A beautiful autumn day was forecast, so I took an afternoon off work and went over to the Midland Mainline to see how the electrification was progressing. Like the Great Western it was piecemeal, some parts were well advanced where as at other spots there was little evidence. At Souldrop, a temporary footbridge had been built as once again Network Rail are demolishing the bridge a year or so after it was raised to accommodate the wires, quite why it's being done again is beyond me? The other work taking place was the reinstatement of the second relief line, again in a somewhat random fashion.

67027 & 67023, 11.53 West Hampstead North Junction-Toton RHTT (3J93), Irchester SP927667
A rail head treatment train, not in action, passes Irchester just south of Wellingborough. It is being hauled by Colas 67027 'Charlotte' with 67023 'Stella' on the rear and forms the 3J93 West Hampstead to Toton. Notice the recent arrival of the electrification masts at the previously open spot.

222023 forms the 12.47 St. Pancras to Corby past Irchester near Wellingborough on the MML. This image shows clearly the electrification process in full swing. Notice also, that the relief line runs slightly higher up on the bank in the background

222017 passes Irchester in Northamptonshire forming the 13.09 St. Pancras to Nottingham. The electrification masts are being installed at this location but in a somewhat random manner. After observing the haphazard and farcical nature of the GWML electrification I would like to think that the engineers would get the MML work done more efficiently?

In stunning autumn light, 222010 races past Irchester just south of Wellingborough working the 14.41 Corby to St. Pancras 1P50 service under the newly installed electrification masts. The weather on this particular day was unseasonally balmy, making it the warmest October day for seven years.

222008 'Derby Etches Park' has descended from Sharnbrook Summit and is passing Irchester working the 13.31 St. Pancras to Sheffield. A little head-on and not lit perfectly but taken to show the engineering works taking place. The up relief line has been reinstated and the pilings are in ready to be sunk and the masts attached. The picture is taken from the new footbridge that was built a couple of years ago.

Another picture taken the wrong side of the sun but I wanted to show the work being undertaken to reinstate the up slow line. It is incredible that after many years that it is being re-built between Sharnbrook and Harrowden Junctions meaning that there will be four track running all the way from St. Pancras to Glendon Junction north of Kettering. Also visible are the pilings for the electrification masts. 43076 'In Support Of Help For Heroes' leads the 13.34 St. Pancras to Sheffield 1D37 service past Irchester.

222018, EM 12.00 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C42, 48L), Irchester SP927667
222018 sweeps around the curve at Irchester as it commences the climb to Sharnbrook summit working the very late 12.00 Sheffield to St. Pancras. This service left Sheffield on-time but something went wrong in the Chesterfield area and by Derby it was even worse. It eventually arrived into St. Pancras some 48 minutes late. In the image the fresh ballast of the recently reinstated up slow line can be seen as well as some of newly installed electrification masts.

222003 'Tornado' heads round the curve at Irchester with the 12.29 Sheffield to St. Pancras working under blue skies and newly installed electrification masts! This was the second train to come from Sheffield that was very late, this one arriving into St. Pancras some 26 minutes adrift.

66607, 11.13 Theale Lafarge-Hope Earles Sidings (6M91), Irchester SP927667
66607 brings the daily 11.13 Theale to Hope Sidings 6M91 empty cement train down the slow line at Irchester just south of Wellingborough. The newly installed electrification masts now are a feature of this previously open view but will soon become a much more dominant one as the masts are installed on the up and down slow.

222022, EM 13.12 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B46, 29L), Irchester SP927667
222022 'Invest In Nottingham' passes under the new footbridge at Irchester working the late running 13.12 Nottingham to St. Pancras. I deliberately chose this ultra wide angle view to show the bridge and the beautiful autumnal blue sky. This bridge replaced a very rickety old structure a couple of years ago as part of the initial MML electrification works prior to it being 'paused' by the government.

222004, EM 13.02 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F35, 6L), Irchester SP927667
222004 'Children's Hospital Sheffield' heads north past Irchester with the 13.02 St. Pancras to Sheffield 1F36 working. It is just about bearable to take picture with the electrification masts in view, but a lot more will be added soon making this spot (and most others) very tricky to get decent pictures at.

43089 & 43083, EM 14.34 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D42, 4L), Souldrop Back Lane bridge
43089 and 43083 power the 14.34 St. Pancras to Nottingham up Sharnbrook Bank past the tiny village of Souldrop just north of Sharnbrook Junction. The picture is taken from a temporary bridge constructed by Network Rail in connection with another set of bridge works on Back Lane. During the initial works associated with the electrification, the bridge was raised and a lot of work done including the installation of some enormous parapets. Now, the rest of the bridge is being demolished and re-built due to structural defects. I'm sure that the defects were present a couple of year ago, quite why it wasn't all done then I'm not so sure?

Footpath & railway crossing closure notice, Souldrop Back Lane
A notice announcing the closure of yet another flat crossing on the network. Network rail have an obsession with closing such crossings that is a shame as they are part of the infrastructure of the railway with the vast majority used perfectly safely.

Demolition of Back Lane Bridge, Souldrop Back Lane temporary bridge
The hydraulic breaker was having to do very little work demolishing the bridge ramp walls at Back Lane in Souldrop. The mortar was doing nothing with the Victorian bricks being simply pulled off in a cloud of dust. The wall was at quite an alarming angle hence the need to to demolish and rebuild with work scheduled to be completed by February 2019.
