43058 & 43045, EM 07.46 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C22, RT), Templars Way Bridge, Sharnbrook
An East Midland's HST with power cars 43058 and 43045 descend from Sharnbrook Summit with the 07.46 Sheffield to St. Pancras The picture is taken from Templars Way Bridge in Sharnbrook village. Like the bridge in the background, the one I'm standing on has had major engineering completed to make it ready for the on-off-on electrification programme.

222020 & 222016, EM 08.56 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F15, 4E), Templars Way Bridge, Sharnbrook
A ten coach Meridian forms the 08.56 St. Pancras to Sheffield. It is seen passing Sharnbrook in Bedfordshire on the down fast with the remains of the old station, closed on 02.05.60, in the background. 222020 and 222016 have spent their whole working life on the Midland mainline since their introduction in 2004. However, with partial electrification on its way some will probably be moving elsewhere.

43047 & 43049, EM 06.34 Leeds-London St. Pancras (1B23, 6L), Templars Way Bridge, Sharnbrook
43047 and 43049 power the 06.34 Leeds to St. Pancras over Sharnbrook Junction. This is one of two daily direct workings to and from Leeds that work via the Midland Line to London. 43047 and 049 were both Western Region power cars that were part of concurrent sets 253023 and 253024.

222012, EM 09.00 London St. Pancras-Corby (1M16, RT), Templars Way bridge, Sharnbrook
222012 heads northwards past the site of the old Sharnbrook station forming the 09.00 St. Pancras to Corby. This was yet another dull and grey spring day that typified the first half of 2107.

222015, EM 09.16 Corby-London St.Pancras (1P24, 4L), Templars Way Bridge, Sharnbrook
222015 '175 Years of Derby's Railways 1839 - 2014' passes a trackside temporary work site at Sharnbrook Junction in Bedfordshire working the 09.16 Corby to St. Pancras. The Carillion work site was home to a team that were preparing the line for the forthcoming electrification that it was announced would be completed to Kettering and Corby by 2019; we'll see?

222018 EM 09.29 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D29, 2L), Souldrop, Back Lane Bridge
222018 is well into its climb of Sharnbrook Bank working the 09.29 St. Pancras to Nottingham. The picture is taken from Back Lane Bridge down a remote byway just outside the village of Souldrop in Bedfordshire. As can be seen clearly, the slow and fast lines are separating here and running at different levels. The bi-directional slow line passes through Sharnbrook Tunnel some further mile behind me whilst the fast lines continue to climb to the summit about two miles northwards.

222019, EM 09.05 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B26, 2L), Souldrop, Back Lane Bridge
222019 descends Sharnbrook Bank working the 09.05 Nottingham to London St. Pancras. It is seen passing the tiny village of Souldrop. This view, like many others on this route, will be totally spoilt by the electrification paraphernalia that it coming to this line soon.

222102, EM 08.49 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C27, 8L), Souldrop SP983611
The message is quite clear here at the foot crossing that takes the footpath over the slow and fast lines just outside the village of Souldrop in Bedfordshire. 222102 passes the crossing with the 08.49 Sheffield to St. Pancras 1C27 working that arrived eight minutes late at its destination.

222011, EM 09.58 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F21, 3E), Souldrop SP983611
222011 is seen from an angle reminiscent of my early railway pictures where I adopted this viewpoint on many occasions! With tricky lighting that has needed a fair bit of 'Photoshoping' the 09.58 St. Pancras to Sheffield passes a foot crossing just outside Souldrop in Bedfordshire.

222011, ET 09.58 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F21, 3E), Souldrop SP983611
A shot that put me in no danger and one that involved no act of trespass. Taken after 222011 had passed over the foot crossing at Souldrop, it shows the train, the 09.58 St. Pancras to Sheffield, approaching Sharnbrook Summit right in the very distance. Notice the new and marginally raised bridge over the railway that carries the byway called Back Lane.

222012, EM 10.16 Corby-London St. Pancras (1P29, 4L), Souldrop Road Bridge SP986609
Having seen 222012 work down to Corby earlier in the morning here it is again returning working the 1P49 10.16 to London St. Pancras. It is seen descending Sharnbrook Bank about to pass under Souldrop Road Bridge. This bridge, that carries quite a busy road, was shut for some months whilst the deck was replaced and ridiculously high parapets installed.

222104, EM 10.01 London St. Pancras-Corby (1M21, 2L), Souldrop Road Bridge SP986609
The only way to secure a picture such as this from Souldrop Road Bridge by the use of a ladder. Network Rail have recently re-built this bridge and installed massive parapets. However, they have also undertaken a considerable amount of line-side clearance that has opened up the view. Here, 222104 works the 10.01 St. Pancras to Corby. 221104 was one of the four former Hull Trains units that moved to East Midlands in 2008/09.

222003, EM 09.29 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C30, 3L), Souldrop Road Bridge SP986609
A lovely open scene that makes the taking of pictures of trains so easy! However, by 2019 this scene will change for ever as the electrification posts, stanchions and wires blight it for ever. So, whilst it can still be enjoyed here is 222003 'Tornado' races south forming the 09.29 Sheffield to St. Pancras. Notice the single slow line at a slightly lower level. There is talk that this could be re-doubled from Sharnbrook Junction through the tunnel, to Wellingborough and Harrowden Junction retuning it to as it was up until it was singled in 1987.

43066 & 43081, EM 10.15 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D22, 4L), Souldrop Road Bridge SP986609.
43066 leads with 43081 bringing up the rear of the 10.15 St. Pancras to Nottingham HST working. It is seen about to pass under Souldrop Road Bridge just north of Sharnbrook in Bedfordshire. Notice the rather old style of double aspect colour light that was installed when the whole area was re-signaled at the end of 1987.

222021, EM 10.26 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F23, 1E), Souldrop Road Bridge SP986609
222021 climbs up Sharnbrook bank working the 10.26 St. Pancras to Sheffield. In 1980 I camped at this spot on the way back from chasing Deltics on the ECML. I then went on to do some of the MML when the Peaks still ruled and there was mechanical signalling; another era!

222103, EM 10.29 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D24, 1E), Sharnbrook SP987608
A huge amount of line-side clearance has taken place around Sharnbrook and new drainage channels installed. The clearance has created some new photographic opportunities such as this one. Here, 222103, formally named 'Dr John Godber' when it was Hull Trains, passes Sharnbrook with the 10.29 St. Pancras to Nottingham.

222010, EM 09.40 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C32, 7L), Sharnbrook SP988607
With the sun trying to break through 222010 races down the gradient from Sharnbrook Summit with the 09.40 Sheffield to St. Pancras. It is passing a spot that has seen a lot of recent work including new fencing but, thankfully not of the palisade type! It's a shame that this spot, and many others on this lien, will soon be spoilt with the arrival of the electrification masts.
