45. Harrowden Junction-27.06.18

In between a hot and busy day at work and an evening out having a jar and a curry with some former colleagues, I called in at Harrowden Junction on the MML just north of Wellingborough. It all looked quite normal apart from the new bridges and some steel pilings that had, evidently, gone in the previous night to take the electrification masts. The onward march of the Midland electrification programme continues if a little slowly, inexorably on.

222011, EM 17.00 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C67, 7L), Harrowden Junction
In glorious summer sunshine 222011 passes Harrowden Junction between Wellingborough and Kettering forming the 17.00 Sheffield to London St. Pancras.

222020 & 222012, EM 17.50 London St. Pancras-Melton Mowbray (1M61, RT), Harrowden Junction
A ten-car East Midlands' Meridian takes the slow line over Harrowden Junction working the 17.50 London St. Pancras to Melton Mowbray. This train will soon stop at Kettering and then take the Corby line, over Harringworth Viaduct to Manton Junction and then to Melton Mowbray. These class 222s have been in front-line service for 15 years now and have provided a good service. However, if you have to ride on them every day you may find them tiresomely noisy and notice that they do not ride well on all sections of tracks.

43083 & 43076, EM 17.45 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B69, 5E), Harrowden Junction
An East Midlands' HST working the 17.45 Nottingham to London St. Pancras passes Harrowden Junction just north of Wellingborough on the Midland Mainline. The HST is led by 43083, which was an Eastern Region power car as part of 254014 whereas 43076, the rear power car, was part of 254011. Close examination of the image sees the driver in a very relaxed poise with both his hands behind his head and his shirt sleeved arms stretched out!

222005, EM 18.02 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F60, 7L), Harrowden Junction
222005 accelerates away from Wellingborough over Harrowden Junction with the 18.02 London St. Pancras to Sheffield (1F60) working. This was a glorious evening that was one of a string of super summer days that contributed towards June 2018 being the sunniest and one of the warmest on-record.

222006, EM 17.29 Sheffield-London St. Pancras (1C70, 1L), Harrowden Junction
222006 'The Carbon Cutter' approaches Harrowden Junction working the 17.29 Sheffield to London St. Pancras. Close examination of this picture reveals a new piece of infrastructure that had been installed over the previous night. To the far left, as the track goes out of shot, there is a large piling that has been sunk in the trackside. This will take one of the new electrification masts in connection with the upgrading of the MML.

43480 & 43465, EM 18.37 Corby-London St. Pancras (1P61, 4E), Harrowden Junction
Looking very smart in their revised East Midlands' liveries, power cars 43480 and 43465 approach Harrowden Junction working the 18.37 Corby to London St. Pancras. Both these power cars are recent arrivals to the MML having been cascaded from Grand Central. Both are buffer beam fitted and were originally eastern power cars that were part of 254013 and 254005 respectively.

222008, EM 18.05 London St. Pancras-Lincoln (1D64, 1E), Harrowden Junction
I like the East Midlands' livery, it looks equally smart on these class 222 Meridians and on the HSTs. East Midlands also makes an effort to keep its trains looking clean and smart. Here, in the lovely soft evening light, 222008 'Derby Etches Park' crosses Harrowden Junction north of Wellingborough, working the daily 18.05 London St. Pancras to Lincoln Central. I find it strange that the station at Lincoln is still persistently referred to as 'Central' by all the railway TOCs and Network Rail. There is only one station in Lincoln since St. Marks closed in 1985!

222004, EM 18.09 London St. Pancras-Sheffied (1F63, 4L), Harrowden Junction
222004 'Children's Hospital Sheffield' takes the down fast over Harrowden Junction forming the 1F63 18.09 London St. Pancras to Sheffield. This was taken at the end of yet another hot and unusually clear day with a 'brilliant' quality of light. This was unusual for the UK as hot summer weather usually brings hazy conditions due to high levels of humidity but this period of weather brought particularly dry air. However, even though the days were hot, this dry air meant temperatures at night were actually quite chilly!

222014, EM 18.12 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B72, 2L), Harrowden Junction
As the shadows lengthen, 222014 forms the 18.12 Nottingham to London St. Pancras. This is going to be the last summer that it is going to be possible to take uninterrupted pictures at this classic location. The drive to electrification means that soon the stanchions and wires will be in place, ruining the open views.

66788, 18.49 Wellingborough-Peak Forest (4Z86), Harrowden Junction
Looking very smart in its GBRF livery, 66788 makes a smokey departure from the down slow to the fast at Harrowden Junction. It was hauling the 18.49 Wellingborough Yard to Peak Forest empty stone wagons running as 4Z86. This image has a potent of things to come! Notice the piling that has been installed in the foreground to the bottom left of the image. This had only been placed the previous night and will soon be added to as the electrification mast is installed into it, totally spoiling this unfettered view.

43045 & 43043, EM 18.34 London St. Pancras-Leeds (1D62, 15L), Harrowden Junction
East Midlands' 43045 and 43043 power the 18.34 London St. Pancras to Leeds past Harrowden Junction just north of Wellingborough. Both these power cars were part of the first Western Region batch delivered in 1976 and 1977 being from sets 253022 and 253021 respectively. With the pair having done over forty years of service they look very smart and fresh and not at all out of place on the modern railway scene.
