A bitterly cold winter's day found me out near to home again to see the 0Z88 light engine move with additional Sunday freight as a bonus!

350368, LN 11.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (2Y16, 6L), Roade Hill
With 350368 leading one of its classmates the 11.14 Birmingham New Street to London Euston passes a classic location between Roade and Ashton on the WCML that I colloquially name as 'Roade Hill'. This spot was a firm favourite with local spotters prior to the scourge of the palisade fencing. Even though the spot can still be utilised, you have to have ladder and some of the angles have been compromised.

390011, VT 11.07 Wolverhampton-London Euston (1B13, 29L), Roade Hill
Looking very smart in it new style Virgin branding, 390011 'City of Lichfield' races past Roade Hill on its way south forming the 11.07 Wolverhampton to London Euston. The original livery created an illusion that the Pendolinos had big windows as the amount of their bodyside that was in black was much greater. However, in this livery, the real size of the windows is clear, they are a lot smaller than you were led to believe.

390127, VT 11.16 Manchester-London Euston (1A17, 22L) & 350106, LN 12.26 Northampton-Milton Keynes Central ECS (5K20), Roade Hill
All is not what it seems at Roade Hill on the WCML between Northampton and Milton Keynes. It appears that the infinitely faster Pendolino is about to overhaul the London Northwestern class 350. But, the opposite is true. 390127 'Virgin Buccaneer' is actually stationary at the red signal on the monstrosity of gantry in front whilst 350106 continues its journey as ECS to Milton Keynes with impunity. There was a severe restriction on the up fast at Milton Keynes that meant all up trains were stacked up behind each other for some distance. It took a good half an hour or so for it to sort itself out with most Virgin services arriving into Euston some twenty minutes to half an hour late.

390127, VT 11.16 Manchester-London Euston (1A17, 22L), Roade Hill
Having got the green light, 390127 'Virgin Buccaneer' begins to ease away from its extended stop at Roade Hill on the southern WCML. It was working the 11.16 Manchester Piccadilly to Euston (1A17). Because of this hold up, it arrived at its final destination some 22 minutes late.

390111, LN 10.27 Crewe-London Euston (1U28, 7L), Roade Hill
The bright sunshine and clear blue sky belies the fact that it was very cold, there was vicious east wind blowing and the temperature was way below 'comfortable'. The fabled 'beast from the east' was only a day or so away! Here, 350111 passes Roade Hill between Northampton and Milton Keynes with the 1U28 10.27 Crewe to London Euston.

221101, VT 11.28 Chester-London-Euston (1A19, 17L), Roade Hill
This Super Voyager was just pulling away from the red signal on the gantry above it at Roade Hill on the southern WCML. It had been sitting at this red light for some ten minutes as all workings were held up due to a problem some 7 miles south in the Milton Keynes area. 221101 'Louis Blériot' was working the 11.28 Chester to London Euston where it arrived 17 minutes late.

66589, 12.28 DIRFT-Wembley (4A91), Roade Hill
66589 begins to get some speed up after climbing the upgrade out from Northampton for some five miles or so. It was working the 12.28 Daventry (DIRFT) to Wembley Freightliner and is seen passing a freezing cold (even though it doesn't look it!) Roade Hill.

390042, VT 12.30-Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1B21, 12L), Roade Hill
Having got the green light from the signal contained in the over-sized gantry above it, 390042 gets under way again from Roade Hill near Northampton with the 12.30 Birmingham New Street to London Euston where it arrived some 12 minutes late. Delays were improving by this stage caused by problems in the Milton Keynes area.

66438, 13.09 DIRFT-Purfleet (4L48), Roade Hill
A regular Sunday freight working is the 13.09 (or other very similar time within an hour's window) Daventry (DIRFT) to Purfleet (or similar) Freightliner. Whatever its start time or destination, it runs as 4L48. Here 66438 hauls the 4L48 past a very cold Roade Hill on the southern WCML.

319433, 13.30 Northampton EMUD-Bletchley CS (5B00), Roade Hill
At the time of writing, about half of these former Thameslink units are in store at Long Marston, the other half have been refurbished and have gone to Northern Trains. London Northwestern retains a few units to provide increased capacity at busy commuter times. Here, still in its old London Midland livery, 319433 is seen passing Roade Hill on the 13.30 Northampton EMUD to Bletchely CS ECS (5B00) working.

I don't take many going-away shots, but when the lighting is right and if it's a light engine it doesn't really matter does it? Here at Roade Hill on the southern WCML, 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' returns from Acton to its home in Rugby carriage sidings following hauling the of the Cumbrian Mountains Express the previous day. Despite the blue skies and sunshine, I was very relived to be able to pack up and go home as the wind was bitter at this exposed location.
