I took a day trip to Swindon at the beginning of December 1977. As it was a Monday we would have had a day off school for some reason or another. I distinctly remember that this must have bene during the firman's strike. This because we saw a number of army Green Goddess fire engines outside a fire station on our walk to Swindon's Railway Museum.

2516, cab, Swindon Railway Museum
A pretty ropey shot taken inside the Swindon Railway Museum. It shows the cab of 0-6-0 class 2301 number 2516.
Class 43, unidentified up working , Swindon station
A class 43 HST arrives at Swindon station on a gloomy day. The running lights glowing in the poor light only emphasises what a dull day this was! Notice that this HST has one of its plastic light covers missing, a common affliction at this time.

50010, up frieght working, Swindon station
This was a bit of a rarity. 50010 arrived from the Bristol direction with a short freight. 50s were designed for fast passenger duties even though they did have all sorts of technology such as slow speed running for freight working, it was rarely used. At this time, 50010 was just coming up to being ten years old. Having been allocated to the London Midland it had moved to the Western in January 1976 where it was allocated to Laira. It stayed a Laira locomotive all of the remainder of its life until it was withdrawn in 1988.

50010, up freight working, Swindon station
Some spotters gather around 50010 at Swindon. Unusually, it is leading a freight working heading east. Note the vintage wooden bodied 4-wheel van behind the engine. It will soon head off into the gloom of this December day.

50010, up freight working, Swindon station
50010 stands at Swindon leading a freight heading east. I wonder where the 4-wheel vintage wooden bodied van is now....scrapped no doubt but these are the type that you occasionally see sitting in the corner of a farmer's field acting as a store of some kind. Notice my ITT radio-cassette recorder on the platform attempting to capture the sound of the 50 leaving the station.

47131, up parcels working, Swindon station
I am not quite sure what has gone on with 47131's domino headcode panel? Was this an experimental design or just an error of some kind, I suspect the latter! 47131 is seen bringing a parcels working into Swindon station. Note the first van behind the locomotive appears to be an ex. GWR Siphon 'G'. 47131, was new in 1966 and, apart from a brief spell on the Midland, was a West Country engine until withdrawn in 1988.
