Having been so impressed by Crewe during our visit to the Open Day in September some mates and I made a repeat visit to take in the delights that the station could offer. We travelled up from Bradford-on-Avon and spent the day copping most of what we saw! A great day out was had by all.

Class 37, 20197 & class 20, stabled, Gloucester Horton Road
Taken as our train entered Gloucester station, a class 37 and 2 class 20s are seen stabled on Horton Road depot. 20197 in the centre is still in its green livery. It survived into the privatisation era becoming a Harry Needle owned locomotive. It was eventually withdrawn and cut up at EMR Kingsbury in 2011.

TDB968009 (ex. 24142), stabled, Worcester Shrub Hill station
This is the second picture that I took of TDB968009 (ex. 24142) in the same position within 2 months. However, this is an infinitely better picture as it includes the impressive enamel BR (Western Region) running-in sign. The frost covered ex. class 24 was used as a carriage heater.

31263, unidentified working, Birmingham New Street station
31263 arrives into Birmingham New Street station. As a March locomotive this particular 31 did a lot of its work in the Eastern Region. Looking at its logs it powered many of the Norwich-Birmingham-Norwich workings and I suspect that this will have been what it was doing on this particular day. A comfy and properly sprung seat in a Mk1. coach has to be better than the plastic 172 units (or whatever else runs on this route) now!

87006, unidentified down working, Birmingham New Street station
87006 pokes its nose out from the gloom at Birmingham's New Street station. We travelled behind this engine from Birmingham to Crewe. This was my first 87 haulage and I remember being quite excited about it! 87006 was regular perform on the WCML right up to 2008/9 when it became one of those selected for export to Bulgaria.

25161 & 24035, stabled, Crewe Diesel Depot
As we came into Crewe all eyes were to the left of the train as we passed Crewe Diesel Depot. The Exa camera did a good job at capturing what was about given its slow shutter speed and the waist-level viewfinder I was forced to use; difficult out of a train window at speed! Here 25161 and 24035 seen stabled on the depot. The 25 was withdrawn in 1981 only to be reinstated 'til 1984. The class 24 had another year in service being withdrawn in November 1978.

47501, 24036 & 24073, stabled, Crewe Diesel Depot
As we slowed down for our stop at Crewe, pictures of the Diesel Depot became slightly easier. Here 47501 is flanked by an unidentified class 25, 24036 and 24073. Both the 24s were withdrawn at this time, 24036 only a few days prior to this picture being taken. Both were taken to Doncaster and broken up. Notice the familiar sight of Rail House to the extreme right of the photograph, so noticeable as it is one of the only high-rise buildings in the area and one that is visible some distance from Crewe but heralding one's approach to the town. At the time of writing in 2022, this building still stands but has an uncertain future, see..... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30029939669/rail-house-crewe

25047, unidentified Cardiff Central-Crewe working, Crewe station
25047 chunters into Crewe station with an unidentified working that had originated in Cardiff. The train had wandered up the Welsh Border all the way to Shrewsbury and then up to Crewe. 25047 looks smart in this picture with its headcode panel yet to have the domino makers installed. It had another three years in service being withdrawn in September 1980 going to Swindon to be broken up.

25184 & 25207,LEs, Crewe station
24184 and 25207 paired up sit over on the far side of Crewe station. They arrived light engine, spent a few minutes at the platform and then headed off south.

85039, up parcels working, Crewe station
Another broadside shot at Crewe station. This time, it shows 85039 on an up parcels working. 85039 lasted until March 1987. It was broken up at MC Metals in Glasgow in 1989.

Class 84 & 40186, up tanker train, Crewe station
40186 arrived at Crewe with an up tanker train in the late afternoon. We were so excited to see this as it was the only 40 of the day! We rushed over but it actually stayed at the platform for sometime. In this image, don't ignore the class 84 standing in the adjacent platform, unfortunately, I don't have its number.

40186, up tanker train, Crewe station
40186 stands at Crewe Station with an up tanker train. Personally, I didn't think that the full sized headcode panelled 40s looked great. I preferred the split box ones or, even better the ones with discs. 40186 survived in traffic until December 1983 being broken up at BREL Doncaster. Notice the vintage parcel trolleys scattered around the platform end; great for sitting on to do some serious spotting whilst eating a cheese and pickle sandwich from your Gola bag!

25027, unidentified Crewe-Cardiff Central working, Crewe station
25027 waits to leave Crewe station with a working to Cardiff Central. The 25s were regular performers on this route for quite sometime until the 33s began to make inroads. Equally, a class 47 could turn up on a working. Note my trademark low angle shot, perhaps it was getting dark and I was having to use a slow shutter speed and I needed my trusty rucksack to act a support; no tripod in those days!
