Prior to some overtime at work Andy and I took and hour or so in the late afternoon at Wellingborough station and on the nearby Mill Road bridge. I find the quality of light at this time of year very rewarding.

222002, 14.55 London St. Pancras-Sheffield (1F45), Wellingborough station
222002 passes Wellingborough working the 14.55 St. Pancras to Sheffield service. The rampant lineside growth suggests that this is a rural station but it is in fact not far from the town centre. The bi-directional relief line also runs in a gap between the foliage to the left of the train!

222009, 15.17 Corby-London St. Pancras (1P45), Wellingborough station
In superb autumn sunshine, EMT's 222009 comes to a halt at Wellingborough working the 1P45 15.17 Corby to St. Pancras 'stopper' service. The relatively new footbridge stands out well in the sunshine. It's nice to see that it has been built (or faced at least) with local ironstone.

222007, EM 15.00 London St. Pancras-Corby (1M46), Wellingborough station
222007 slows for its stop at Wellingborough working the 15.00 semi-fast from St. Pancras to Corby. The unit will make one further stop after Wellingborough at Kettering before arriving at Corby.

43043, EM 15.15 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D47), Wellingborough station
43043 sweeps around Wellingborugh's steeply cambered curve at line speed leading the 1D47 15.15 St. Pancras to Nottingham HST service. If I was commuting from London at about this time I would try hard to travel on one of the HST services rather than a Meridian. This power car was part of the first batch of HSTs to be delivered to the Western Region back in 1976 being nominally part of set 253021. This one is EMT's earliest and lowest numbered example that they operate.

222022, EM 15.02 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B56), Wellingborough station
222022 is just managing to catch the late afternoon sunshine at Wellingborough with a lot of the scene now in shadow. It is working EMT's 15.02 Nottingham to St. Pancras service that sweeps straight through Wellingborough having made its last scheduled stop at Kettering before arriving in the capital.

222023, EM 14.36 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1C57), Mill Road bridge
The time of day has finally caught up with me! 222023 working the 14.36 Nottingham to St. Pancras 'fast' service is about to pass under Wellingborough's Mill Road bridge. Still basking in the afternoon sunshine to the right is the former Wellingborough Shed (15A>08.63 & 15B<08.63-05.73). There are plans on the table for this building including turning it into a supermarket! On the skyline is the twenty megawatts Burton Wold Wind Farm that opened seven years ago in May 2006.

222008, EM 15.30 London St. Pancras-Nottingham (1D49), Mill Road bridge
Approaching the middle of October by this time (about 16.30) the low sun is beginning to create problems! Meridian 222008 is still partially lit as it sweeps through Wellingborough station working the 1D49 15.30 St. Pancras to Nottingham service. This view from Mill Road bridge clearly shows the bi-directional single slow line that has become a severe bottleneck in more recent times. There are calls for it to be redoubled between Sharbrook Junction and Kettering. This is probably something that will only happen if (ever!) the line is electrified north of Bedford.

43064, EM 15.28 Nottingham-London St. Pancras (1B58), Mill Road bridge
The 15.28 Nottingham to St. Pancras HST service approaches Wellingborough station seen from the lofty heights of Mill Road bridge. The leading power car is 43064 which was first in service as part of Eastern Region's set 254005 back in 1977. Having had our short break from work it is time for Andy and I to head back for the evening shift!
