With a steam-operated position move due through Roade at teatime, I made the decision to rush home a little early from work and get myself to a spot to capture its passing. I managed some other photographs in the lovely warm late September light.

390010, VT 12.40 Glasgow Central-London Euston, Roade
390010 passes Roade working the afternoon 12.40 Glasgow to Euston Pendolino service. I am standing on the remains of the former Stratford-upon-Avon and Midland Junction Railway (SMJR) embankment at the point where it used to cross the WCML.

90048, 11.14 Felixstowe North-Trafford Park Freightliner (4M87), Roade
The 11.14 Felixstowe to Trafford Park 4M87 Freightliner approaches Roade on a balmy late September evening led by 90048. This is not a local spot that I use very often as it is tricky to get to and is, strictly speaking, a bit of a trespass but not on railway property I hasten to add.

Class 221, VT 16.10 London Euston-Bangor, Roade
Virgin's evening 16.10 Euston to Bangor service approaches Roade worked by an unidentified Voyager. I ought to have been able to get the number as the train passed but with my aging eyes this has become more difficult than it used to be; what about the rest of you out there?

350259, LM 15.54 Birmingham New Street-London Euston, Roade
The 15.54 Birmingham New Street to Euston London Midland service passes Roade worked by 350259. The large structure behind the train is the now-disused Pianoforte factory that was once rail-connected. There are plans afoot to redevelop the site and turn it into a huge new housing development; something the village will no doubt be opposed to!

221101 & 221110, VT 13.58 Holyhead-London Euston, Roade
221101 'Louis Bleriot' and 221110 'James Cook' pass Roade working the 13.58 Holyhead to London Euston Virgin West Coast service. I am standing in a hard-to-get-to spot atop an embankment where the former Stratford-upon-Avon and Midland Junction Railway (SMJR) used to cross the West Coast line on what was known, colloquially, as the Tin Bridge.

221111, VT 16.33 London Euston-Preston, Roade
221111 'Roald Amundsen' approaches Roade working the Virgin West Coast 16.33 Euston to Preston service. Even though there is no clear unbroken sky the clouds is thin allowing some really soft winter light through. This contributes towards making this time of year one of my favourites from the point of view of railway photography at least.

325012, 325013 & 325015, 16.22 Willesden-Shieldmuir Mail Terminal (1S96), Roade
The daily (M-F) 1S96 Royal Mail train passes Roade worked, as is usually the case by a trio of Class 325 units. In this case, 325012 leads 325013 with 325015 bringing up the rear. Since the Royal Mail postal trains of old finished nearly ten years ago this is the only route that Mail is conveyed on.

350261, LM 15.02 Crewe-London Euston, Roade
Running on the up fast line past Roade the 15.02 Crewe to Euston service is seen worked by 350261. These trains run as all station stopper services in the first part of their journey from Crewe becoming fast from Rugby non-stop to London.

70000, Tyseley-Southall (5Z44), Roade
Looking very smart in its recently repainted Brunswick Green paintwork after having some significant accident damage repaired 70000 'Britannia' passes Roade. It and its support coach are heading from Tysley to WCR's Southall depot in preparation for its first mainline charter work for some time. It is scheduled to lead the Steam Dreams Cathedrals Express in two weeks so let's hope that things go to plan!

NB It did haul the charter with no issues but then went on to have a whole host of other issues over the next few years making some wonder if the locomotive was jinxed? (Note added 01.25).
