54. Mallard 75 at Grantham-07.09.13

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2013 > 54. Mallard 75 at Grantham-07.09.13
On a bright and pleasant September day I took a trip to Grantham to join the Mallard 75 celebrations. A siding had been partially re-laid just south of the station in order to accommodate the event. It was nice to see Mallard and a Deltic at the event but missing was an HST power car and the presence of a Class 56 (that towed the combo from York) was odd not fitting the event! Prior to the event, I spent some time revisiting some ECML haunts south of Grantham.

91102 'City of York' sweeps northwards past Essendine working the 08.30 King's Cross to Edinburgh East Coast service. It is remarkable to think that I first visited this spot in 1979 camping the night with Graham. Then we had the soundtrack of Deltics to keep us company.

The perils of photographing trains on electrified routes! 158783 takes the up slow line at Essendine having descended Stoke bank working the 08.32 Nottingham to Norwich East Midlands service. I have included this image as a reminder to place the subject of a photograph better before pressing the shutter.

The stock, however, is hired in from East Midlands Trains wearing their house colours but with no branding. Celebrity liveried 91110 'Battle of Britain Memorial Flight' was named last year at Railfest in York. It certainly strikes a pose wherever it goes and nowhere more than here storming along the ECML at Little Bytham. It is leading the East Coast 1D07 09.03 King's Cross to Leeds service.

Sidelined to the down slow line the 1R74 08.57 Norwich to Liverpool East Midlands Trains' service is slowly preparing to pass on to the down fast line a short distance behind where I am standing. However, the passage of a couple of faster services would take priority inducing a delay to the Liverpool train. 158864 is working the service at a very remote spot near the Lincolnshire village of Westby.

Led by power car 43307 the 10.00 Kings Cross to Aberdeen HST service approaches the summit of Stoke Bank near the Lincolnshire village of Westby. Whilst East Coast (as part of the National Express empire) has not been particularly successful in recent years at least they have retained some titled trains evoking a past era. This HST service is one of four that the company promote being titled the 'Northern Lights', I was to see one of the others later in the day at Grantham.

If I had used my standard lens to photograph the 07.42 Liverpool to Norwich service descending the south side of Stoke Bank it would have been completely dwarfed by the scale of the area. Therefore I have opted to utilise my rarely used 80-200mm zoom that has captured 158773 in a patch of sunshine. I have to question (again!) if a two-car DMU is appropriate for an Inter-Regional service such as this?

A regular and interesting freight flow through from Norfolk to Yorkshire remains the so-named 'Redfears'. It's a heavy train that conveys sand from an extraction site just east of King's Lyn to a glass factory at Monk Bretton near Barnsley. It is seen slogging up Stoke bank near the village of Westby lead by 66037 running as the 6E84 that left Middleton Towers at 08.20. 55019, on display, Mallard 75 celebrations, Grantham Yard
From many angles, the bulk and size of a Deltic is impressive and no more so than from the front. The huge nose cone of 55019 'Royal Highland Fusilier' is seen in a small yard to the eastern side of Grantham station on display as part of the Mallard 75 celebrations. It is proudly wearing a Deltic Preservation Society who own the locomotive that is, unfortunately not mainline registered at present. I am not sure as to what the large number one is applied to the marker lights panel.

Something is amiss here with the nameplate attached to the side of 55019 'Royal Highland Fusilier'. Close examination reveals that it is sitting proud of the Deltic's bodywork suggesting that it is some kind of copy. Can anybody advise what has occurred here, please. I need some information here! As part of the Mallard 75 celebrations at Grantham on this late summer's afternoon on display were, as to be expected, 4468 'Mallard' and to keep it company 55019 'Royal Highland Fusilier'. However, also in the busy yard next to Grantham station was DCR's very tatty 56311 as seen here. This locomotive had towed the combo from York but I see no reason why it should have remained on display in the yard having no particular relevance to the fine hertiage of the ECML.

With its unfeasibly large numbers applied to the front end, 56611 sits in Grantham station's small yard specially reinstated for today's Mallard 75 event. The DCR locomotive had towed 55019 'Royal Highland Fusilier' and 4468 'Mallard' from York yesterday and then hung about in the yard generating limited interest.
