Whilst my wife and son undertook some retail therapy I nipped to Paddington for an hour or so on the tube from High Street Kensington.

5572, ACW Circle Line working, High Street Kensington station
The withdrawal of the C69 stock is well underway with a set coming out of service every week or two before then going for scrap. They are being replaced by the new but troublesome S7 stock but this is not going entirely to plan. 5572 arrives at High Street Kensington with an anticlockwise Circle Line working catching some welcome late summer sunshine.

5711, CW Circle Line working to Edgware Road, High Street Kensington TfL station
A clockwise Circle Line working arrives at High Street Kensington station. I travelled aboard C69 5711 as far as Paddington station. This will probably be one of my final journeys on a C69 set with their withdrawal now well under way.

43070, GW unidentified working & 43185, GW 13.05 London Paddington-Penzance, London Paddington station
A familiar scene at the buffer stops of Paddington station. A pair of FGW HSTs rest in between services. 43070 is nearest the camera having arrived with an unidentified service whilst 43185 will soon depart from platform four at the rear of the 13.07 to Penzance.

43094, GW 11.00 Bristol Temple Meads-London Paddington & 43128, GW 13.00 London Paddington-Bristol Temple Meads, London Paddington station
A pair of FGW HSTs are seen at the buffer stops at Paddington. To the left 43040 has just arrived with the 11.00 service from Bristol with passengers making their way along the platform. The driver has already left the leading cab having set the tail lights for the return working this all before the member of the cleaning staff has even reached the stock! To the right, 43128 will power the rear of the 13.00 service to Bristol in just over an hour's time.

A fine line-up at the country end of London Paddington sees four FGW HSTs ready for their next workings westwards. From left to right.....

- 43002 (the oldest power car seen here as one of the pioneer set 253001 entering service in October 1976), 13.05 to Penzance.
- 43183, an unidentified working.
- 43004 'First for the future/First ar gyfer y dyfodol', 13.00 to Bristol Temple Meads.
- 43030, 13.45 to Swansea.

5600, Circle Line working ex Hammersmith, Paddington station
The slow withdrawal of the C69 stock has been underway since the start of the year but is not quite at the point that TfL wanted due to problems with its replacement, the S stock - sounds a familiar story, doesn't it! Operating an ex-Hammersmith Circle line working 5600 approaches Paddington's TfL station seen from the end of platform one.

165112, GW 12.57 London Paddington-Oxford, London Paddington station
Basking in some welcome sunshine 165112 leaves Paddington station working the 12.57 to Oxford. These Tames Turbos units have been the mainstay of these services, as well as others to Reading, Newbury and Bedwyn for many years now but with the forthcoming electrification they will be ousted in the future that is the wires ever get strung!

165108, GW 11.38 Bedwyn-London Paddington & unidentified C Stock working, London Paddington station
The northern side of Paddington's throat is interesting as the TfL lines run parallel to the heavyweight tracks for some distance just beyond Royal Oak. A photograph that illustrates this shows 165108 approaching Paddington working the 11.38 from Bedwyn whilst a C stock TfL service heads off I presume operating either a Circle or Hammersmith & City Line service to Hammersmith.

Clearly illustrating the twin exhaust set up from its MTU V16 4000 engine, 43004 'First for the future/First ar gyfer y dyfodol' leads the 13.00 FGW service to Bristol Temple Meads away from Paddington station.

360201, HC 13.03 London Paddington-Heathrow T5, London Paddington station
Heathrow Connect operates a small fleet of five Class 360s between Paddington and Heathrow's Terminal Five. They offer an alternative to the non-stop runs offered by Heathrow Express by stipping at intermediate stations. 360001 has just left Paddington with the 13.03 to Heathrow Terminal Five.

165117, GW 12.01 Oxford-London Paddington & 165127, GW 11.37 Oxford-London Paddington, London Paddington Station
A pair of FGW Thames Turbo units that both originated from the same station approach Paddington travelling cautiously through the throat. In the background 165127 is working the 11.37 stopper from Oxford whilst nearest the camera 165117 approaches having worked the 12.01 'fast' service. In the not-too-distant past the fast services were operated by Network SouthEast using sets of proper coaching stock hauled by a Class 50 or a 47; those were the days!

5706, Hammersmith-Barking Hammersmith & City line working, London Paddington station
As well as being used on the Circle Line the C69 stock also operates on the Hammersmith & City Line for TfL. Seen from the end of platform one at Paddington 5706 approaches the TfL platforms with a Hammersmith to Barking service.

5605, unidentified Hammersmith & City line working, London Paddington station
C69 set 5605 approaches Paddington's TfL platforms working an unidentified Hammersmith & City Line service that I presume is heading to Barking. This stock should be completely withdrawn by the start of 2014 with the S7 currently being introduced but this is not going quite to plan so the old stock may be around for a little while longer than anticipated.

43177, GW 11.30 Bristol Temple Meads-London Paddington, London Paddington station
The 11.30 ex Bristol Temple Meads HST service arrives at Paddington station. It is being led by power car 43177 which was one of the final batches of HSTs introduced during the summer of 1982 to replace locomotive-hued services on the NE/SW route.

332010, HX 13.25 London Paddington-Heathrow T5, London Paddington station
There are fourteen CAF-built Class 332s operated by Heathrow Express. They are impressive-looking units with their huge wrap-around front screens (not all of which are actually glass) and their smooth lines. 332010 waits at Paddington to work the 13.25 service to Heathrow Terminal 5. While extremely convenient and quick, Heathrow Express services are extremely expensive but I suppose that you 'pays your money and makes your choice'!

165106, GW 12.07 Oxford-London Paddington, London Paddington station
The 12.07 Oxford to Paddington FGW service arrives at its destination worked by 165106. These units have just passed their twentieth year in operation but their time is limited now with the forthcoming electrification likely to precipitate their withdrawal or cascade to other areas.

165106, GW 12.07 Oxford-London Paddington & 165104, GW 11.50 Moreton-in-Marsh-London Paddington, London Paddington station
Thames Turbo action at Paddington! To the left 165106 has just terminated with the 12.07 limited stop service from Oxford while 165104 has just arrived with the 11.50 from Moreton-in-Marsh and is just disgourging its passengers.

332206, HX 13.12 Heathrow T5-London Paddington, London Paddington station
Heathrow Express' 332206 arrives at Paddington seen passing under the huge Bishops Road bridge working the 13.12 from Heathrow Terminal Five. Despite the sponsorship tie-up with Vodafone it is very expensive to travel on HX services between Heathrow and Paddington; not a great greeting for foreign visitors navigating the final leg of their journey to central London!

43017, GW 10.20 Swansea-London Paddington, London Paddington station
Completing its one hundred and ninety-mile journey from Wales the 10.20 ex Swansea HST service arrives at Paddington. The train is being led by one of the first batches of HST power cars that entered service in 1976 as part of set 253008, 43017. This has been in continuous operation on the GWML ever since giving nearly forty years of service a testament to Sir Kenneth Grange's design back in the early 1970s.

43176, GW 12.00 Bristol Temple Meads-London Paddington, London Paddington station
The 12.00 HST service from Bristol Temple Meads is just arriving at Paddington station led by power car 43176. Cleaning staff and train crew are seen walking along the platform to prepare the train once the passengers have disembarked readying it for its returning west-bound working.
