98. A fistful of freight & a Northern unit-01.11.24

A very dull autumn afternoon found me out locally to capture, ostensibly, a Northern unit move to Wolverton but in doing this I managed to photograph a number of freights and an interesting light engine move. Due to the grey and drab weather, the quality of the images is poor with Photoshop having to work hard!

Class 66, 11.48 Lawley Street-London Gateway (4L46, 80L), between Roade & Ashton
Whilst making my way to my chosen spot for the afternoon the very late-running 4L86 11.48 Lawley Street to London Gateway Freightliner service caught me unawares walking between Roade and Ashton. Thankfully, the unidentified named Class 66 is in the Genesee & Wyoming orange livery making it stand out from the otherwise grey and dull surroundings. Compare this view with a similar one taken in May, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30054240102/x66006-11-15-ditton-dollands-moor

66623, 13.14 Wembley Yard-Tunstead Sidings (6H50, 45L), Victoria bridge
As it was so dull the camera was struggling selecting a high ISO setting (with the consequential high noise problems). To partially counteract this I selected a slightly lower shutter speed but then had to opt for a more head-on angle to avoid the worst effects of motion! 66523 'Lest We Forget' passes Victoria bridge just south of Roade leading the 13.14 Wembley Yard to Tunstead Sidings 6H60 stone empties.

66720, 14.40 DIRFT-Dollands Moor (6O55, 8L), Victoria bridge
Leading the daily empty water train (6O55, 14.40 DIRFT-Dollands Moor), 66720 'Wascosa' passes Victoria bridge just south of Roade. The noise that the empty cargowagons make is instantly recognisable but the phenomenon when another train passes (as was about to happen here) is even more odd as the whole train seems to take on another resonance.

66532, 90013 & 90006, 09.32 Felixstowe North-Ditton (4M88, 69L), Victoria bridge
As the 4M88 09.32 Felixstowe to Ditton Freightliner was running to time as it past me at Victoria bridge near Roade I am not sure if there had been a problem with 90013 or 90006 'Roger Ford'. I suspect that they were removed at Crewe Basford Hall as this was where the heavy delay, later in the train's journey, set-in. 66532 ‘P&O Nedlloyd Atlas’ is leading the train.

150109, 10.50 Newton Heath TMD-Wolverton Centre Sidings (5H70, 3E), Victoria bridge
Running on time, the 5H70 10.50 Newton Heath to Wolverton Centre Sidings 150109 empty stock move is within a few miles of its destination as it passes Victoria bridge just south of Roade. Having spoken with an employee of Gemini Rail Group at Wolverton I wonder if this unit, going for a refurbishment (probably its last before withdrawal), will have the rotten vestibule floor malaise that the other Class 150s he has worked on have had?

RTT screen grab showing 5H70
Getting trains in and out of Gemini Rail Services Wolverton facility is a rather complicated affair with trains being forced to come to a halt on either the up or down slow lines and then reverse on to the plant's network. This screenshot shows the 5H70 Northern move from Allerton having come to a halt on the down slow line and waiting to be signalled back into the Wolverton complex. With more and more traffic passing through the works one wonders if an alternative arrangement needs exploring.
66759, 12.18 London Gateway-Hams Hall (4M47, 40L), Victoria bridge
66759 'Chippy' leads the 4M07 12.18 London Gateway to Hams Hall service past Victoria bridge between Roade and Ashton. Named after the late career railway man, Clive Chippington, the 66 was named in 2016. With the light fading fast there were just two more trains to wait for but will the light permit a photograph?

66006, 11.59 Burton-ot-Wetmore-Acton TC (6V96, 11L), Victoria bridge
With the number of Class 66s still remaining in their as-built EWS liveries complete with branding now getting far fewer as DB Cargo continues to repaint and rebrand them catching one is getting more tricky. In fact, 66006 leading the Burton-ot-Wetmore to Acton TC empty wagons past Victoria bridge near Roade is the earliest member of the class still wearing this livery. The paintwork is standing up pretty well considering that it dates from October 1998. Could you imagine a first-generation diesel still wearing its original BR paintwork twenty-six years after it entered service? Having said this, not many actually survived that long in service! With the light all but gone it really ought to be time to head for home but with just one more thing of interest approaching, not quite yet....!

67005 & 92041, 13.32 Crewe TMD-Wembley HS (0A06, RT), Victoria bridge
Now, in desperate light, the 13.32 Crewe TMD to Wembley Yard light engine move passes Victoria bridge just south of Roade. The sight of a Class 92, all be it dead, is, apart from the Caledonian Sleeper services that is, rare. 92041 'Vaughan Williams' is being led as 0A06 by 67005 'Queen's Messenger'.
