With a dull and grey September dawning, I was not really inspired to go out and photograph the passing Cumbrian Mountain Express but I did. Later in the day after the sun came out a light engine Class 37 caught my attention.

66570, 05.20 Crewe Basford Hall-London Gateway (4L52, 3E), site of Roade station
In terribly dull early morning light the 4L52 05.20 Crewe Basford Hall to London Gateway Freightliner is seen passing Roade as an Avanti Pendolino heads north.

66565, 02.57 Felixstowe North-Garston (4M45, 36E), site of Roade station
66565 passes Roade leading the 02.57 Felixstowe to Garston 4M45 Freightliner. This is not a view that I normally use as it requires the camera's flip screen to be opened up and me holding the camera at full arm's length over the parapet extension; how the normals crossing the footbridge stare! If the skies had been clear this shot would have been disastrous as it would be straight into the rising sun! This 66 is one that has the yellow visibility panel extended down on to the buffer beam unlike most of the other members of the class; it looks odd like this in my eyes.

86259, outward leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express, 06.39 London Euston-Carlise (1Z86, 6L), site of Roade station
As usual, running on the down fast line, 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' passes Roade a little late leading the 06.39 Euston to Carlisle Cumbrian Moutain Express. Often, if this regular charter is late signallers will path it on the down slow as far as Hanslope Junction where it will be held until a reasonable path between AWC services is found. Today, running some ten minutes late here at Roade this did not happen with a number of Pendolinos now two signals behind it and running on double caution all the way to Rugby. Good running was maintained for the rest of the journey to Carlisle from here including the steam-led section with SR 34067 'Tangmere' putting in a good performance over Shap. However, things went badly wrong on the return journey with Tangmere failing in spectacular fashion just south of Appleby. Eventually, 47812 was able to take the train back to Carlisle where it also promptly failed resulting in 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' being summoned from Carnforth. The AL6 then took the train back to Euston arriving, I believe, after midnight, what a shame for all concerned.

37800, 09.31 Wembley Yard-Derby RTC (0M57, 18E), site of Roade station
Extremely back-lit but a Class 37 is a Class 37! 37800 'Cassiopeia' passes Roade light engine as the 09.31 Wembley Yard to Derby RTC 0M57 move. The Rail Operations Group livery looks very smart on these evergreen survivors from the 1960s with them still having plenty of work on the network.

66414, 05.54 Trafford Park-London Gateway (4L44, RT), site of Roade station
The 4L44 05.54 Trafford Park to London Gateway Freightliner emerges from Roade cutting into some warm September sunshine lead by 66414.
