Often, if this regular charter is late signallers will path it on the down slow as far as Hanslope Junction where it will be held until a reasonable path between AWC services is found. Today, running some ten minutes late here at Roade this did not happen with a number of Pendolinos now two signals behind it and running on double caution all the way to Rugby. Good running was maintained for the rest of the journey to Carlisle from here including the steam-led section with SR 34067 'Tangmere' putting in a good performance over Shap. However, things went badly wrong on the return journey with Tangmere failing in spectacular fashion just south of Appleby. Eventually, 47812 was able to take the train back to Carlisle where it also promptly failed resulting in 86259 'Les Ross/Peter Pan' being summoned from Carnforth. The AL6 then took the train back to Euston arriving, I believe, after midnight, what a shame for all concerned.
