82. The Eastriggs Eloper & a bit of steam-14.09.24

A day of two interesting workings passing close to home in Roade. Firstly, an early charter The Eastriggs Eolper and second an LSL steam-hauled stock move from Crewe to Southall. To add to the occasion the sun was out with it being a super early autumn day in mid-September.

92010, CS 20.45 Inverness, 21.43 Aberdeen & 19.50 Fort William (1M16, 3L), between Roade & Ashton
With the rising sun just giving enough light, the 'Highland' sleeper is seen passing between Roade and Ashton. A smartly turned out 92010 leads a decidedly dirty and work-stained set of stock forming the 20.45 Inverness/21.43 Aberdeen and 19.50 Fort William 1M16 sleeper with its passengers beginning to stir with just forty-five minutes before arrival into Euston. I was glad of the sun on my back as it was a really chilly start to the day with a little grass frost.

57310, outward leg of The Eastriggs Eloper, 06.20 Watford Junction-Eastriggs MoD (1Z10, RT) & 390156, VT 06.29 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly (1H67, 3L), between Roade & Ashton
Looking very smart in the early morning light just south of Roade 57310 leads the outward leg of the oddly named Eastriggs Eloper charter that had left Watford Junction at 06.20 running as 1Z10. The name of the charter is an obvious nod to the fact that the Eastriggs MoD facility is just a short distance from Gretna Green, the destination of many an eloper, including Mrs. On The Up Fast and myself, who married there! After Eastriggs the charter was to visit MoD Longtown via reversal into Upperby Yard before returning home. It is just being overhauled by 390156 working the 06.29 Euston to Manchester service.

66613, 03.15 Felixstowe North-Trafford Park (06.09 Willesden Yard-Crewe Basford Hall (0M69, 4E), between Roade & Ashton
Something is amiss here: this should be running as the regular 4M16 03.15 Felixstowe to Trafford Park Freightliner service. However, as can be seen, it is running as a light engine with the 0M69 reporting number. It left Willesden Yard using 4M16's path rather than from Felixstowe ending up being terminated short of Trafford Park at Crewe Basford Hall. The locomotive is seen heading north between the Northamptonshire villages of Roade and Ashton. Any further information is appreciated.

90003 & 90044, 02.57 Felixstowe North-Garston (4M45, 45E), between Roade & Ashton
Matching pair 90003 and 90044 pass through the Northamptonshire countryside just south of Roade on a perfect September morning hauling the 4M45 02.57 Felixstowe to Garston Freightliner service. Unfortunately, I have not quite framed the doubled-headed locomotives quite right but side-on opportunities are limited around this location a situation exacerbated by the low angle of the rising sun.

66572, 05.20 Crewe Basford Hall-London Gateway (4L52, 2E), between Roade & Ashton
Whilst the Canon EF 24-105mm lens has its weaknesses its versatility is a boon as is the case here. At its minimum focal length, it gives a commendably controlled wide-angled view here revealing the recently sown wheat field. 66572 is seen in the background leading the 4L52 05.20 Crewe Basford Hall to London Gateway Freightliner service. I did moot the idea of using Photoshop to clone out my shadow to the right but decided to keep the image of myself including my natty hat!

88003, 08.02 Tilbury FLT-DIRFT (4M07, RT), Roade cutting
Taken against the September sunshine 88003 'Genesis' leads the 08.02 Tilbury FLT to Daventry 'Tesco Express' through Roade cutting. This service and the balancing 4L48 are almost exclusively hauled by one of DRS' Class 88 now.

805013, 08.48 Holyhead-London Euston (1A34, 2L), Roade cutting
805013 works the 08.48 Holyhead to Euston Avanti service through Roade cutting. Catching some warm September sunshine the AWC livery looks smart but I cannot help but feel that the large swathes of off-white will not be looking so good after a winter's operation?

46100, 07.59 Crewe HS-Southall LSL (5Z31, 35L), Roade cutting
If this train had been half an hour or so later the lighting would have been perfect with it being a little head-on in this vie taken above Roade cutting. 46100 'Royal Scot' leads the 5Z31 07.59 Crewe HS to Southall LSL with D1924 ‘Crewe Diesel Depot’ offering some assistance at the rear. This appears to be a straightforward stock move with the locomotive allegedly returning later in the week.

D1924, 07.59 Crewe HS-Southall LSL (5Z31, 35L), Roade cutting
D1924 'Crewe Diesel Depot' brings up the rear of the 07.59 Crewe HS to Southall LSL empty stock move. The smoke at the front gives away that 46100 'Royal Scot' was leading the train passing through Roade cutting a little late, time it continued to lose until it reached Southall's LSL base.
