34. Longest day evening at Milton Malsor-21.06.13

THE ARCHIVE FILES > Archive-2013 > 34. Longest day evening at Milton Malsor-21.06.13
2013's longest day was a bright, warm and sunny one that fell on a Friday. This meant that I could go out after dinner to a local favoured spot for evening photography at Milton Malsor. Unfortunately, Network Rail has installed the dreaded palisade fencing at this spot so a ladder is now a requirement.

During the early evening, there are a number of empty stock moves from Northampton to Bletchley where the units are serviced and prepared for the next day's services. 350240 and two fellow Desiros pass Milton Malsor working the 5B51 19.18 Northampton to Bletchley Carriage Sidings.

350112 LM, 18.05 London Euston-Crewe (2U91), Milton Malsor SP740553
Unfortunately, due to my elevated position on a ladder, I have managed to crop the rear of the 18.05 Euston to Crewe off! However, the lighting is so good at Milton Malsor that I have included the image of 350112. Crewe services usually bypass Northampton taking the Weedon route but in the morning and evening one train each way serves the town.

350262, LM, 19.25 Northampton-London Euston, Milton Malsor SP740553
350262 passes Milton Malsor working the evening's 19.25 Northampton to Euston London Midland Service. Whilst it is a smashing midsummer's evening threatening cloud is beginning to build from the east just out of sight in this photograph.

350246, 19.30 Northampton-Milton Keynes Central (5K08), Milton Malsor SP740553
Another way that London Midland get their evening commuter stock back to Bletchley as an alternative to empty coaching stock is to operate a local working. 35246 is seen working the 19.30 Northampton to Milton Keynes service past Milton Malsor.

350119, LM 18.29 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1G40), Milton Malsor SP740553
Even a humble unit can look nice in the right weather conditions! 350119 leads another Desiro past Milton Malsor near to Northampton working the 1G40 Euston to New Street service. I stood on my ladder in a very similar position a week or two past with the comparison between the oil seed rape field in the background being the most noticeable change, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30059321565/x350114-350127-19-13-london-euston

90029, 16.31 Garston-Dagenham (6L48), Milton Malsor SP740553
Notice the ominous cloud gathering in the northeastern sky! However, this has not stopped the evening light from the midsummer sun behind me spoiling the image. 90029 looks very smart in its DB Schenker livery as it passes Milton Malsor leading the 6L48 16.31 Garston to Dagenham empty car transporter train. The previous day this will have worked north carrying various Ford products to the company's finishing and distribution centre.

350127, LM, 18.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1Y73), Milton Malsor SP740553
In the warm evening midsummer sunshine 350127 and a fellow Desiro pass Milton Malsor working the 18.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street service. The 1Y73 working is one a number that come quickly and fast between 17.00 and 20.00 bringing thousands of commuters back from London.

350110, LM 18.33 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (1W26), Milton Malsor SP740553
A wider angled view at Milton Malsor creates an interesting image of a pretty mundane train! 350110 works the 1W26 18.33 Birmingham New Street to London Euston train. Whilst daytime midsummer lighting is my least favourite with its very deep shadow and extreme contrast the morning and evening light is far more attractive being softer and warmer as is the case here.

350115, 19.53 Northampton EMD-Bletchley CS ECS (5B00), Milton Malsor SP740553
Another pair of Desiros, led by 350115, head for overnight stabling and servicing at Bletchley. The 5B00 19.53 Northampton EMD to Bletchley Carriage Sidings pass near the village of Milton Malsor.

Class 350, LM 18.02 Crewe-London Euston (1U42), Milton Malsor SP740553
An unidentified Class 350 Desiro takes the Weedon 'old' line thus avoiding Northampton working the 18.02 Euston to Crewe service. Whilst I am standing atop my step ladder near the village of Milton Malsor the train is passing Milton crossing near Blisworth. Notice the footbridge, this is a favourite location and one stood on yesterday morning, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30059745861/x90016-19-50-fort-william-20-44-inverness

350233, LM 18.54 Birmingham New Street-London Euston (2Y22), Milton Malsor SP740553
London Midland's 2Y22 18.54 Birmingham New Street to Euston passes Milton Malsor worked by 350233 and another unit. With the build-up of clouds from the east, the summer evening light is changing subtly as the sun sets lower in the summer solstice sky.

350125, LM 19.13 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1Y75), Milton Malsor SP740553
350125 leads another unit (unfortunately out of sight) past Milton Malson on the approach to Northampton working the 19.13 Euston to New Street service. With its precise lighting and warm colour temperature, this mis-framed image has made the cut.

66005, 16.57 Halewood-Southampton Western Docks (6O42), Milton Malsor SP740553
Seemingly working hard on the steady climb out of Northampton 66005 heads the 16.57 Halewood to Southampton Western Docks loaded car train past Milton Malsor. The side-skirted double-decker cartics will be conveying high-value left-hand drive JLR products to the continent for onward movement to various countries.

66501, 18.30 Lawley Street-Felixstowe North (4L73), Milton Malsor SP740553
With the evening light on the longest day beginning to fade (by now it was 20.26) 66501 'Japan 2001' leads the well-loaded 4L73 18.30 Lawley Street to Felixstowe North Freightliner past Milton Malsor near Northampton. As can be seen, the thundery-looking clouds are massing in the background heralding some overnight rain.

66591, 14.18 Trafford Park-Felixstowe (4L96), Milton Malsor SP740553
The gathering cloud from the east has turned an otherwise blue sky a strange hue as the sun sets on 2013's longest day. 66591 slogs up the steady gradient from Northampton towards Roade past Milton Malsor leading the 4L96 14.18 Trafford Park to Felixstowe Freightliner. The tail of the train is out of sight behind bushes that have grown up along the side of the line here in more recent years such is Network Rail's poor management of their linesides.

350129, LM 19.46 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (1Y79), Milton Malsor SP740553
It's now just fifteen minutes before 21.00 so this is the last picture taken on this summer solstice evening before heading for home. A pair of London Midland Desiros approach Northampton past Milton Malsor led by 350129 working the 19.46 Euston to Birmingham New Street service. Another example of an image with superb late evening summer lighting; how I long for this come mid-January!
