It was a normal Sunday with nothing special, or so it seemed on both counts! Then, I noticed mid-morning that an STP (Short Term Plan) had been slotted into the timetable showing as an HST. Secondly, I noticed at lunchtime that there were all sorts of delays in the Berkhamstead area with the down slow showing as blocked with stationary trains all around the area except for the up slow. making enquiries it appeared that some OHL had been brought down with other lines appearing to be affected. A Thunderbird move there and back from Rugby was also noted running as 1Z99. All trains were facing heavy delays including the mysterious HST move noted earlier.

88001, 12.41 DIRFT-Tilbury Container Terminal (4L48, 4L), Roade cutting
88001 'Revolution' roars southbound through Roade cutting leading the seven-day-per-week 4L48 Tesco express. The speed which the electric Class 88 lift their trains up the steady incline from Northampton compared to a Class 66 is stark making full use of their ample five thousand four hundred horsepower. Just entering some shade caused by a well-timed cloud the train is the 12.41 Daventry (DIRFT) to Tilbury service.

43046 & 43049, 13.08 Wembley Yard-Crewe HS (5Z57, 27L), site of Roade station
Following railtour duties the previous day (the Settle to Carlisle & Tyne Valley Pullman) one of LSL's reto. Blue Pullman/HST sets pass through Roade returning to its base at Crewe. 43046 'Geoff Drury 1930-1999' leads with power car 43049 'Neville Hill' at the rear. Having left Wembley Yard on time at 13.08 and running as 5Z57 the train soon ran into difficulties near Berkhamstead where 350111 had brought down the catenary just south of Northchurch Tunnel causing huge delays to all services. The HST is seen here over an hour late but through some spirited running and favourable signalling decisions, it arrived at Crewe just twenty-seven minutes late.

805005 & 805008, 12.48 Holyhead-London Euston (1A42, 14L), site of Roade station
The Evero revolution continues, if a little slowly! 805005 and 805008 work the 1A42 12.48 Holyhead to Euston service. Whilst I would hope that these trains are a step up from the Voyagers they, like the diesels, require double manning with no inter-connecting facility. Smart in their fresh Avanti paintwork the pair pass the village of Roade and a pleasantly warm Sunday afternoon
