Having already seen the two outward footexes earlier in the day heading out and back from Northampton conveying Coblers' supporters to Wembley for the League Two playoff final I want out again to see the evening return workings. unfortunately, the fans were not to come back happy with the team losing to Bradford City 3-0.

390043, VT 13.40 Glasgow Central-London Euston, Roade
Seen from the western side of the WCML in Roade 390043 'Virgin Explorer' works the 13.40 Glasgow Central to Euston. From this side of the line, the former Pianoforte factory site can be clearly seen behind the train. With the factory finally closing a few years ago its future is uncertain with a plan now on the table to demolish the whole site and build a new housing estate.

350119, LM 16.46 London Euston-Crewe, Roade
350119 approaches Roade on the down fast line working London Midland's 16.46 Euston to Crewe service. I am standing on the top of the truncated embankment that used to carry the former Stratford-upon-Avon and Midland Junction Railway (SMJR) over the WCML. It crossed the line on a structure known locally as the Tin bridge.

350244, up ECS, Roade
An up unidentified empty stock working passes the former Pianoforte factory to the south of Roade worked by 350244. This industrial scene is set to change completely in the coming years as the site is earmarked for a large housing development.

390006, VT 17.00 London Euston-Manchester Piccadilly, Roade
The Virgin Trains 17.00 London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly approaches Roade worked by 390006. Contrary to what the photograph appears to show, I am on the 'right side' of the fence with it running along the bottom of the bank if rather overgrown!

350250, LM 16.14 Birmingham New Street-London Euston, Roade
The 16.14 Birmingham New Street to Euston London Midland service, worked by 350250, accelerates past Roade, having just exited Roade cutting. This wide-angle view clearly shows the former Pianoforte factory that was rail-connected with the tracks diverging from the slow lines about level with the front of the train.

350113, LM 16.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street, Roade
350113 approaches Roade working the 16.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street London Midland service. Like nearly all of their services since the start of the winter timetable in December this is a single-set four-car train. This decision has not been a resounding success with many services over-crowded, thus, I wonder when the summer timetable commences in a couple of weeks if services revert to double sets again?

90044, LM 16.50 London Euston-Northampton Footex (1T16), Roade
The dream is over - for this season anyway! Northampton Town supporters will be on board drowning their sorrows as their team will not be joining League One next season having been beaten 3-0 by Bradford City. At least they will be enjoying travelling on a 'proper' train chartered by London Midland. The Virgin Pretendolino set is being hauled by 90044 which left Euston at 16.50 heading to Northampton. The train is seen approaching Roade

The rear of the 16.50 Euston to Northampton football special passes Roade with DVT 82126 at the tail end. Chartered by London Midland and running as 1T16 the train was bringing disappointed Cobblers supporters home following their 3-0 defeat by Bradford City in the League Two payoff at Wembley.

66413, up LE, Roade
DRS' 66413 runs pass Roade with an unidentified up light engine move. Light engine moves on the WCML are fairly rare but, despite this, I was not able to identify what it was for.

350254, LM 18.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street, Ashton Road bridge
With the grey light fading fast photography is getting tricky! London Midland's 350254 is seen between Roade and Ashton working the 18.49 Euston to Birmingham New Street train.

66419 Willesden Yard-Rugby HOBC (6Y60), Ashton Road bridge
In preparation for weekend engineering works the HOBC (High Output Ballast Cleaner) train is seen passing close to Roade as the 6Y60 Willesden Yard to Rugby train. GBRf's 66419 is leading the train with 66610 out of sight on the rear. Apologies for the poor technical quality of the image, the light was pretty dire by this stage in the early evening.

Under power and working hard 66610 is shoving the 6Y60 Willesden to Ruby HOBC 'drain train' past Roade. The train is heading to Rugby for overnight stabbing before then being used on an engineering possession on the Weedon Loop.

Class 390, VT 19.07 London Euston-Liverpool Lime Street, Ashton Road bridge
An unidentified Virgin Pendolino approaches Roade on a particularly dull Saturday evening working the 19.07 Euston to Liverpool service.

66142, up infrastructure train, Ashton Road Bridge
The second infrastructure train within fifteen minutes passes but this one is heading south. As the view north from this spot is almost totally obscured by rampant undergrowth this is the rear of the train with 66142 appearing to be under power. Unfortunately, I could not find what this working was.

67026, 18.42 London Euston-Northampton footex (1Z11), Ashton Road bridge
Still looking very smart in its one-of-special livery applied last year and unveiled by HRH The Queen, 67026 'Diamond Jubilee' leads the 18.42 Euston to Northampton footex. Seen approaching Roade, the train was carrying disappointed Cobbers supporters back from their day out at Wembley where their team was beaten 3-0 by Bradford City in the League Two playoff final. Notice the rag-bag collection of stock the passengers were travelling in not that they will probably have noticed that!
