A dull and grey April morning (where has the sun gone this spring?) got me out across the field from home to capture The Golden Arrow Statesman charter and an unusual local footex.

90035, SR 19.50 Fort William, 20.44 Inverness, 21.43 Aberdeen-London Euston, Roade Hill
The up Highland sleeper service passes just south of Roade. EWS's 90035 leads the 1M16 19.50/20.44 Inverness/21.43 Aberdeen to Euston service on a grey and dull morning. Notice that the vinyls on the side of the Class 90 have been altered either by accident or design to create a new TOC 'WS' and a new number '900'!

90044, LM 05.31 Wembley Yard-Northampton (5T14), Roade Hill
A photograph that will certainly win no prizes for its composition! 90044 leads the Pretendolino set as the 5T14 05.31 Wembley Yard to Northampton empty stock working. The train, chartered by London Midland, is in association with a couple of footex charters running later in the day.

66567, 03.39 Crewe Basford Hall-Thamesport (4088), Roade Hill
66567 leads the morning's 03.39 Crewe Basford Hall to Thamesport Freightliner service. The train is seen from a spot, despite appearances, that is the right side of the fence just south of Roade. A ladder or steps is useful to make the shot easier to master but alternatively, the fence can be used to gain a little height.

90049, 22.00 Coatbridge-Felixstowe North (4L89), Roade Hill
I was hoping that the 4L89 20.00 Coatbridge to Felixstowe North would be Class 86 hauled as it often is by a pair of locomotives. However, squeezing a pair of locomotives into the shot this side of the huge and somewhat over-engineered signal gantry would be tricky so I will take 90049 as an alternative!

An unidentified up Virgin service passes just south of Roade worked by 221112.

90046, 03.09 Felixstowe North-Ditton (4M45), Roade Hill
90046 leads the 03.09 Felixstowe to Ditton Freightliner between Roade and Ashton in Northamptonshire. Apart from its in-house green paint scheme the Freightliner Class 90 has minimal branding with relatively small vinyls on the nose and cabsides.

390124, VT 06.10 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston, Roade Hill
Brightening up an otherwise grey and dull Saturday morning 390124 heads south working Virgin's 06.10 Manchester to Euston service. Notice that the front couple of coaches are just beginning to tilt as the train takes the right-hand curve.

82126, LM 07.44 Northampton-London Euston (1T15), Roade Hill
Now then, this is the way for football supporters to get to a match! London Midland have hired in Virgin's Pretendolino set to add capacity to get football supporters from Northampton to Wembley. Still Virgin branded, 82126 leads the set of stock past Roade with supporters looking forward to their League 2 play-off match with Bradford City.

66590, 03.51 Felixstowe South-Lawley Street (4M88), Roade Hill
The 4M88 03.51 Felixstowe South to Lawley Street (Birmingham) Freightliner approaches Roade led by 66590. Whilst this particular spot is perfect for photographing up workings, as can be seen here, capturing down services is not so easy given the embankment to the left.

57316, outward leg of The Golden Arrow Statesman, 06.52 Birmingham International-Canterbury (1Z77, 5L), Roade Hill
Statesman Rail's Golden Arrow Statesman stretches its legs as it heads south between Northampton and Milton Keynes near the village of Ashton. For this first leg, running as 1Z77, from Birmingham International to Acton lane 57316 is leading with 57313 out of sight on the rear. The second leg from Acton Lane to Canterbury was to be hauled by 34067 'Tangmere'. Both the Class 57s were photographed on railtour duties last weekend in London, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30058169891/x57313-channel-coast-express-06-53 and... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30058169893/x57316-channel-coast-express-06-53

57313, outward leg of The Golden Arrow Statesman, 06.52 Birmingham International-Canterbury (1Z77, 5L), Roade Hill
57313 brings up the rear of The Golden Arrow Statesman charter as it passes between the Northamptonshire villages of Roade and Ashton. Running as 1Z77 the charter left Birmingham International at 06.52 and on arrival at Acton Lane 34067 'Tangmere' would take over to complete the run to Canterbury.

90044, LM 09.10 London Euston-Northampton (5T18), Roade cutting
Having deposited it first Northampton Town supporters in London to make their own way to Wembley for the League 2 playoff match with Bradford City the empty coaching stock returns to pick up more Cobblers fans. Always quick to criticise the railways, London Midland have pulled off a blinder here and should be applauded. They have hired in the Pretendolino stock and locomotive, in this case a rather tatty looking Freightliner liveried 90044, to run four footexes (two each way morning and evening) enabling fans to reach Wembley and get home again. The ECS, running as 5T18, is seen passing through Roade cutting having left Euston promptly at 09.10.

390125, VT unidentified up working, Roade
390125 'Virgin Stagecoach' passes Roade with an unidentified an up Virgin West Coast service. As can be seen, this spot seems relatively clear but the brambles and nettles were a bit of an issue climbing the fence that I wanted to get as close to as possible!

82126, LM 10.37 Northampton-London Euston (1T19), Roade
A service train with a difference! Due to the anticipated demand from Northampton Cobblers fans to get to Wembley for the League 2 play-off with Bradford City London Midland hired in the Pretendolino set and operated two up footexes. This is the second one of the morning passing Roade running as 1T19 having left Northampton at 10.37 with DVT 82126 leading. Out of sight on the rear Freightliner liveried 90044 is providing the power. It's a shame that I have not quite framed the DVT in between the masts properly.
