72. The NMT & a few other bits & pieces-14.08.24

A day off work coincided with the passing of Network Rail's NMT that I managed to see twice. As well as the usual fare there was also a WCR empty stock move later in the day. Unfortunately, the weather was particularly dull that added nothing to the quality of the photographs!

390006, VT 11.35 Manchester Piccadilly-London Euston (1A33, 3L), Blisworth
On a rather grey and dull early afternoon 390006 'Rethink Mental Illness' speeds southwards past Blisworth working the 1A33 11.35 Manchester to Euston service.

390126, VT 12.30 London Euston-Glasgow Central (1S63, 1L), Blisworth
Avanti's 390126 passes Blisworth on the Weedon loop line (the 'old route') working the 12.30 Euston to Glasgow Anglo Scottish Express. The flat and dull weather of this August day does not bring anything to the quality of this image.

43357 & 43277, 11.59 Crewe Up & Down Pottery Loop-Derby R.T.C via London Euston (1Q29, RT), Blisworth
A mix-match Network Rail NMT passes Blisworth on the outward leg of its Crewe to Derby high-speed run. Running as 1Q29 it left Crewe's Pottery Loop at just before 12.00 and made rapid progress being pathed in between Pendolino workings. Former CrossCountry 43357 leads the train with ex-LNER 43277 bringing up the rear. The later now wears a distinctive Colas colour scheme and branding.

DR73948, stabled & 390148, VT 12.40 London Euston-Birmingham New Street (9G21, 10L), site of Blisworth station
The sidings that remain at Blisworth, where there was once quite a sizeable station, are often the home to some track machine or other. Today when passing there were also a number of vans and orange jackets about. As can be seen, Colas Rail Plasser and Theurer Switch and Crossing Tamper DR73948 is being worked on and ready for more work to come. To the rear, 390148 'Flying Scouseman' has just sounded its warning horn to the workers around and races past the scene working the 12.40 Euston to Birmingham New Street service.

66761, 16.05 Litchfield TV sidings-Dagenham Docks (cancelled from Wembley Yard) (0Z43, 1L), site of Roade station
Perhaps on some sort of GBRf Thunderbird rescue run, 66761 'Wensleydale Railway Association 25 years 1990-2015' passes through Roade as the 16.05 Litchfield TV to Dagenham Docks light engine move running as 0Z43. However, it appears that its services at Dagenham were perhaps not needed as this run was terminated in Wembley Yard.

43277 & 43357, 11.59 Crewe Up & Down Pottery Loop-Derby R.T.C via London Euston (1Q29, RT), site of Roade station
With Colas branded 43277 'Safety Task Force ' now leading the 11.59 Crewe to Derby RTC via London Euston returns past Roade. It is now on the down fast line and so will continue on the 'old line' via Weedon rather than taking the Northampton loop. At the rear 43357 is giving the NMT a shove after leading the up working as far as Euston earlier. 43277 was last seen and photographed back in 2021 soon after it had been taken out of service with EMR, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/30019707109/x43277-arley-station-hst

66729, 13.57 Birch Coppice-London Gateway (4L68, 4L), Hyde Road bridge
The heavily loaded 4L68 13.57 Birch Coppice to London Gateway passes slowly through Roade cutting lead by 66729 'Derby County'. From a standing start in Northampton, it is a steady and long climb to this point passing the village of Roade that shows the limitations of a Class 66 especially when compared with an electrically hauled service that makes much lighter work of things!

57009 & 47848, 11.23 Carnforth Steamtown-Southall WCR (5V42, 83E), Hyde Road bridge
The 11.23 Carnforth to Southall 5V42 empty stock move is seen passing through Roade cutting from Hyde Road bridge. More unusually, the stock is double-headed rather than being top and tailed which is normally the case. 57009 'GJ Churchward' is leading with 47848 tucked in behind. Back in the 1970s as 47079 I 'spotted' this Canton-based locomotive many times in my home area in Wiltshire and even had haulage behind it to York, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/23615804204/x47079-west-wilts-scouts-jubilee
