On a beautiful April morning, I spent an hour or so in a field near the Northamptonshire village of Milton Malsor waiting to capture the fine sight of 'Tornado' passing on a northbound charter.

350130, LM 07.49 London Euston-Birmingham New Street, Milton Malsor SP740558
London Midlnd's 350130 passes Milton Malsor between Northampton and Roade working the 07.49 Euston to Birmingham service. The April light is often very crisp and this day is a perfect example of that but, whilst the sun was out there was a still a chilly nip in the air.

By reducing the camera's shutter speed to 1:80/second and panning from right to left the train remains almost completely sharp whilst the background becomes blurred. Included within this intended motion blur is Milton Malsor's Parish Church of Holy Cross to the left of the image. The subject is the rather mundane 350101 working the 07.33 Birmingham New Street to Euston service.

66143, Hams Hall-Dollands Moor (4Z57 VSTP pathed), Milton Malsor SP740558
EWS liveried 66143 passes Milton Malsor just south of Northampton leading a Hms Hall to Dollands Moor Freightliner service. This is not a regular working an was pathed under VSTP (Very Short Term Planning) as do a number of services heading to Dollands Moor and the continent. If anybody can pass on to me any further information about this service please get in contact through the website.

Class 350, LM 07.54 London Euston-Birmingham New Street, Milton Malsor SP740558
Using a much wider angle than adopted in the previous photographs brings another dimension to this bucolic scene in the fields near the Northamptonshire village of Milton Malsor. An unidentified London Midland Desiro passes working the 07.54 Euston to Birmingham New Street service. If it had been a two-set train my efforts to capture the train successfully would not have worked!

60163, outward leg of The Cathedrals Express, 07.45 London Euston-Holyhead (1Z23), Milton Malsor SP740558
With not even a hint of exhaust from 'new build' LNER Peppercorn Class A1 60163 'Tornado' as it passes Milton Malsor in Northamptonshire on a fine spring morning. It is leading Steam Dreams' Cathedrals Express that left Euston at 07.45 running as 1Z23 to Holyhead. Whilst the outward leg went to plan things went badly wrong for Tornado on the return with it being declared a failure at Rhyl with a brake problem. Consequential late running meant the entire Class 92 hauled leg from Crewe was cancelled leaving customers somewhat stranded!

350254, LM 07.54 Birmingham New Street-London Euston, Milton Malsor SP740558
One of my favourite local spots to home is in the fields east of the line at Milton Malsor near Northampton. With a morning sun on your back watching and recording the passage of the various trains is a delight. The only thing that mars the experience is the noise from the nearby M1 motorway which is about half a mile behind me. 350254 leads the 07.54 Birmingham New Street to Euston service southwards past my spot.
