I took an afternoon run to Wimbledon to see The Return of the Jurassic Crompton charter that was bringing enthusiasts back from the Swanage Railway's diesel gala. The result was a little more successful than yesterday's effort!

Wimbledon A signal box (SR, 1948)
Quite why the superb Wimbledon A signal box has been partially painted with some poor quality faded pink paint is somewhat of a mystery not helped by some vandalism and patching with paint of a different colour! The classic 1948 Southern structure is now one of a handful remaining including some on the TfL network. Often referred to as 'Odeon-style' these boxes are extremely elegant Art-Deco styled and would have been very modern and contemporary when opened. This example was used as an S & T school when it was closed but that work is no longer undertaken so its present-day use is limited.

444009, SW 15.17 Portsmouth Harbour-London Waterloo (1T56, RT), Wimbledon station
I have never been to Wimbledon station and was surprised to find that platforms six and seven were fenced off with sliding gates opened when a stopping train used these platforms. Designated as the fast lines trains did speed through pretty regularly even for a Sunday afternoon so I suppose H&S won on this one! 444009 passes working the 15.17 Portsmouth Harbor to Waterloo service where it would arrive in about fifteen minutes.

450113 & 450034, SW 17.37 London Waterloo-Alton (2L55, RT), Wimbledon station
During my brief stay at Wimbledon of about thirty minutes this was the only train that I observed actually stopping at one of the 'fast' platforms necessitating staff opening the sliding gates to permit entry and exit from the train. 450113 and 450034 have just come to halt at platform seven working SWR's 17.37 Waterloo to Alton service.

D6515, 73109, 4TC & 69002, The Return of the Jurassic Crompton, 14.20 Swanage-London Waterloo (1Z35, 7L), Wimbledon station
An interesting collection of locomotives and stock passes through Wimbledon station at speed conveying passengers back from what should have been a great day out at the Swanage Railway's spring diesel gala. Running as 1Z35 the 14.20 Swanage to Waterloo charter is led by Crompton D6515 (formally 33012, see.... https://www.ontheupfast.com/p/21936chg/25501874004/x33012-10-42-portsmouth-harbour-bristol ). Tucked in behind the Crompton is ED 73109 'Lt Jenny Lewis RN' Battle of Britain 50th Anniversary' wearing its GBrF livery. Passengers were travelling in former Southern Region 4TC (BR Class 438) set 413 with re-built Class 56 now 69002 'Bob Tiller CM&EE' bringing up the rear.

69002, 4TC set, 73109 & D6515, The Return of the Jurassic Crompton, 14.20 Swanage-London Waterloo (1Z35, 7L), Wimbledon station
Passing Wimbedon's former A signal box the rear of the returning Jurrasic Crompton charter is seen with 69002 'Bob Tiller CM&EE'. Just in front of the rebuilt Class 56 is the stock in the form of preserved 4TC set 413 with D6515 'Lt Jenny Lewis RN' and 73109 'Battle of Britain 50th Anniversary' leading. The train was running some twenty minutes late at one stage in its journey from Dorset but was rapidly making up time arriving just seven minutes adrift at Waterloo.

Rapidly making up lost time from earlier in its journey the 1Z35 14.20 Swanage to Waterloo charter heads towards central London having passed through Wimbledon station on which I am standing. The interesting collection of stock and locomotives is headed by the partially obscured Crompton D6515 'Lt Jenny Lewis RN' followed by ED 73109 'Battle of Britain 50th Anniversary'. The stock is former 4TC set 413 with converted 56057 now 69002 'Bob Tiller CM&EE' bringing up the rear. I did not have time to wait for the return working that passed back this way after spending a very short time at Waterloo.

458407, stabled, Wimbledon Depot
Considering the amount of work that it does Wimbledon Traincare Depot looks rather quiet on this sunny Sunday afternoon. Seen from a passing District Line TfL service only 458407 is identifiable. The depot opened in 1974 on the site of the former Dunsford Road depot dedicated to the maintenance and servicing of a vast range and number of first-generation EMUs.
